Review

"If you have the desire for the work, this account will give the methods and professional standards that help succeed, wherever you are in your broadcast career, whatever your skills level, whether you broadcasting online or on air. This book will help you to develop strong personalities, create exciting internet content, write & present compelling news, become a powerful storyteller, build original programming, strengthen your interviews, show prep and air check effectively, work in multiple platforms, cover news emergencies, and much more. You will find there a Quick Start guide, the handy reminders, the proven principles of powerful radio, which are the core of the author's work. Valerie Geller is internationally acclaimed broadcast consultant and talent coach, she works with top stations and individuals."--NeoPopRealism Journal

"Valerie Geller has just saved me hours of time, maybe even days. People who are interested in launching a career in talk radio frequently approach me for advice and insight. This is flattering and I'm always honored and happy to help. From now on I can share a few keen insights and conclude with, "and before you do anything else, get a copy of Beyond Powerful Radio by Valerie Geller." Done and done! It's tempting to call Beyond Powerful Radio the bible of personality radio, but that's not quite accurate. It's more like The Boy Scout Handbook of personality radio, a practical guide with specific techniques for creating effective radio and managing a personality-driven radio station. While Beyond covers the waterfront, from hiring to voice technique to air checking to emergency broadcasting to promotion to sales to websites to research, the book is at its best when it's focused on Geller's real passion: Helping personalities create emotionally resonant spoken-word radio. At the core of the veteran consultant's philosophy is the importance of storytelling and her three cornerstone tenets: "Tell the Truth, Make it Matter and Never be Boring."--Radio-Info.com

"Based on the successful books, 'Creating Powerful Radio' and "The Powerful Radio Workbook," this combined edition provides even more methods for preparing and delivering powerful radio content. Valerie Geller explains the techniques of producing and presenting information, storytelling, news, talk and personality radio. New material is provided on: show prep, interview techniques, news, integrating radio and television, promotion and airchecking techniques."--Radiomagonline.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful to this aspiring podcaster October 2, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
What drew my attention to this title was its promise of offering expert help in regard to podcasting and internet radio.

Well, it does and it doesn't. The book is very clearly oriented to commercial radio and talk radio in particular.

But the elements of creating a successful podcast or internet radio (or, increasingly, video) show are common and Ms. Geller covers these elements in copious, almost suffocating detail. In short, "Beyond Powerful Radio" live up to its hype. Geller draws on her own experiences and those of dozens of other broadcasters. The book is fun to read just because it provides insight into the broadcast radio business.

Many of the sections will be superfluous to many, if not most, internet broadcasters. But some of the sections are precious, such as those on developing your voice, show prep and, particularly, promotion and marketing. The internet is a blessing in that it gives anyone the opportunity to broadcast their message - but you still have to develop an audience that knows you exist and will listen to your message. The book is very short on internet specific techniques for audience building, but you can still learn from the examples Geller provides of how broadcast stations do it.

The book has so many contributors and attributions that it sometimes feels disjointed, but the overall effect, in a way, is like attending a breakout session at a seminar and hearing ideas offered at a fast pace.

As noted, my interest was attracted because I thought this might be helpful in creating a podcast series I am planning.

My interest has paid off here: this is an excellent book for the novice broadcaster, over the air or on the internet.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Voice of Reason in the Digital World November 3, 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Let me start by saying that this is a wonderful book. Written in a warm and friendly tone, it's not what you would expect from the otherwise cold culture of broadcasting and the monolithic digital business it has become.

"Beyond Powerful Radio" is a must-have for anyone who has the desire to communicate in this medium. Thankfully, the scope of the book lives up to its title and goes beyond the realm of commercial radio and provides solid and even inspiring advice for those who are interested in podcasting, which is now a level playing field for anyone with an idea, a voice, and a computer.

Just like if you wonder what the "beyond" is in Bed, Bath & Beyond, the "beyond" here is a savvy treatise on communication in general... not just radio. The book's subtitle: A Communicator's Guide to the Internet Age-News, Talk, Information & Personality for Broadcasting, Podcasting, Internet, Radio ... is exactly that.. a guide for communicators and a wealth of knowledge about the world-wide avenues for communication. It's a hefty 500 pages of economically-written sage advice, and there's not a word of fluff to be found.

As a writer, I found great insights and encouragement to continue sharing my "voice" in all the media in which I communicate. While I was somewhat sad when I finished the book (you'll feel like you've made a new friend in Valerie, and will hate to see her go), it's a book I'll come back to as a reference time and again, and will look forward to future updates as the medium evolves.
