Editorial Reviews

Amidst the adventure, hardships and excitement of her teenage years on the Dakota prairie, Laura Ingalls Wilder (Meredith Monroe) puts pen to paper and begins to document her extraordinary life. Uniquely told in two enthralling movies brought together on one DVD, this story is an honest portrayal of the many challenges and humble delights of the 19th-century frontier. During this time, Laura matures from young girl to woman, making sacrifices to help her family survive. She also meets her loving husband, Almanzo Wilder (Walton Goggins), and together with their daughter, Rose, they set off on their own pioneer adventure in Missouri. Inspirational, remarkable, and true, this heartwarming story is a fitting tribute to the beloved author and the legendary woman who has inspired generations.

I am so disgusted with this movie! My daughter loves the Little House books. Because this dvd says "True Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder", she asked for this dvd for Christmas. The two of us were shocked when we watched it. It is not the true story whatsoever. We couldn't even make it through the whole dvd. Laura Ingalls Wilder would have been horrified to see what "Hollywood" did to her story. The movie starts out with Laura going with her father to a shanty being worked on. There is a man's jacket hanging on a post, and she looks into the pocket and pulls out a letter marked "Almanzo". She is then fixated on the person to whom this name belongs, even talking about it with Mary. There are quite a few other discrepancies in the movie, but the one that really "got to me" was when Almanzo, after they were married, takes Laura to the house he built for her. They begin to embrace, and he starts leading her to the bedroom. She stops him and says something like she didn't want their "first time to be here". He asks "the bedroom?"...and then the scene shows them on horses madly galloping out to a deserted house that had been burned down...they get off their horses, start embracing and kissing, and fall to the ground to consummate their marriage. This is utterly, utterly ridiculous! There is NO place in Laura's books where she speaks of sex. Typical of today's movie-makers, having to put sex in it. And regarding how she was so interested in Almanzo....in true life, she was more interested in his horses than she was in him initially.

I wish I could return the dvd and get my money back. We don't even want to give it away, as the story line is ridiculous; it'll be tossed in the garbage.

My daughter was extremely disappointed.

I purchased "Beyond the Prairie: The True Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder" with high hopes. I have been a huge LIW fan since girlhood, starting with her books and progressing to books and primary research about her. I don't claim to be a LIW authority, but I do know enough to state categorically that THIS is not the "true" story.

Some examples (no spoilers here, these are LIW details that even the most basic fan should know): this Laura has blonde hair, whereas the real Laura complains over and over in the books how she wishes she had her sister Mary's blonde hair, lamenting her own brown locks. (By the way, Mary's hair in this movie? It's red...)

Also, this Laura is almost browbeaten into teaching her first school by her parents; in the books (and life), Laura wasn't exactly excited to be a teacher, but did not need her parents to guilt her into it, either. (Although, I will admit, they did change some of Laura's own fiction, turning the fictional Mr. Brewster back into Mr. Bouchie...amazing, something true!)

They even changed the way Laura and Almanzo met, turning a long-developed relationship into love at first sight (not even sight of each other, but sight of a name) for Laura, who in real life admitted to her daughter late in life that she fancied Cap Garland long before she ever thought of Almanzo Wilder as husband material. (OK, maybe that was a spoiler, but it deserved to be spoiled, it was so poorly done!)

Do a little research; you will find there are many, many more inconsistencies. You can make a game out of it, "Spot the Errors".

I too loved these particular movies. I thought Meredith Monroe did excellently as Laura, and Lindsay Crouse did well as Caroline Ingalls. But -- and maybe this is because I've always been a huge fan of his -- I thought Richard Thomas did VERY well as Charles Ingalls. He and Lindsay made the roles their own and made long-time LH fans sort of "forget" about Michael Landon and Karen Grassle, even momentarily.

My only question is why isn't Part II being offered along with Part I? It should have been released as a 2-disc set instead of one at a time.

I was surprised (and very disappointed) with the numerous inaccuracies throughout this movie. Anyone who has done even a little research will immediately question this movie, especially since it is supposed to be the REAL story of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

I've just watched this dvd of this movie. I saw this on network television and just loved it. I like Richard Thomas as charles ingalls, but i think that melissa gilbert could be the only one to play laura. Some one wrote that is was only the first movie on this dvd but this dvd has both "Beyond the Prairie" and "Beyond the Prairie II" When you watch this don't think about the tv series "Little House" because this is very different. Example: Laura met Almanzo in the dakota territory instead of walnut grove, etc. But this is still a great movie to watch.

I was very very disappointed with this purchase. The DVD is advertised as the real story but it has many discrepancies to Laura's story. I would not recommend it if you are interested in Laura Ingalls Wilder.
