Book Description

January 15, 2009
To all of our years together, Lisa Montgomery s husband said one evening, raising his glass in a toast, some of them good. They laughed and clicked wine glasses. But after his death, Lisa discovers he hadn't been teasing. When the contents of a secret post office box shatters her illusions about her marriage, she struggles to come to terms with his betrayal. Forced to examine her life as a wife, mother, and as a woman, she realizes her troubled childhood didn't allow her to be anything but composed and quiet. Then Terry O'Neal enters her life... But a jealous coworker watches, wanting to destroy what he can't have. Beyond the Quiet shares the story of one woman's struggles though bitterness, loss, and betrayal, learning to cherish each moment and follow her long-buried dreams. It's the story of how a quiet, passionless widow becomes spirited enough to climb onto her lover s shoulders for a piggyback ride... in the nude.

Review

Beyond the Quiet is a heartfelt, deeply sincere labor of love about a woman who loses everything -- and finds her way back. --Michael Prescott, NYT Best Selling Author, including Comes the Dark, Stealing Faces, The Shadow Hunter, and Last Breath

Beyond the Quiet is a novel for all women, everywhere. This heartrending story touches on all of the joys, sorrows, trials and triumphs that come with being a woman. The plot is captivating and Lisa is a complex and likeable character. I couldn't help rooting for her every step of the way on her journey to self-discovery. Brenda Hill's writing is sensual, emotional and beautiful. --M. Jean Pike, Award Winning author of Heatherfield and Waiting For The Rain

Not only does Brenda Hill create an amazing story with characters that will stay in your heart long past the story's ending, but she also teaches many life lessons to her readers as well. I not only enjoyed this story, but I felt as though I came out of it feeling better about myself; I was reminded of how precious life is and how wonderful it can be. ...Brenda Hill takes her readers through a story all about Lisa and her self-discovery. She finds out what it is like to truly love someone, to truly hate someone, and all that is in between. At forty-four years old Lisa is just starting to live her life. Her attempt to open up to the world is jarred when she learns more about her husband's betrayal, her friend's betrayal, and encounters a man who is stalking her. This story is definitely not lacking in excitement! --Ashley Merrill, Front Street Reviews

About the Author

An avid reader since her grandfather told stories about magical castles in his native France, Brenda Hill feels books are a joy. No matter her circumstances, she can open a book and find love, laughter, and a light to guide her way. Because of the crises she's faced in her own life, Brenda focuses her stories on women and the crises in their lives. She highlights a problem and offers possible solutions while celebrating the inner strength women sometimes forget they possess. Her #3-ranked Amazon short story, Am I Wife or Daughter is based on her own struggle with her mother's care. Her first novel, Ten Times Guilty, garnered a four-star review from Romantic Times Book Review magazine and her short story, featured in True Story Magazine, was rated a 'Twelve-tissue Tearjerker.' Brainbench certified in Written English, Brenda lives in Southern California where she's currently a freelance editor. She rounds out her time conducting novel writing classes (see her workbook, Plot Your Way to Publication, Vanilla Heart Publishing January 2009) and writing feature articles and restaurant reviews for her local newspaper.

More About the Author

No matter the genre or age of the character, my stories are about women in crisis. I highlight a problem and offer possible solutions while celebrating the inner strength we women sometimes forget we possess.

My second novel, Beyond the Quiet, is about a repressed woman in her forties, who, after her husband dies, finally learns to live. And my first, Ten Times Guilty, is a suspense about a young single mother learning her value after a brutal attack. In my third novel, With Full Malice, a mystery/thriller scheduled for release in 2012, my character finds her strength after a secret society targets someone she loves.

I've written short stories, features and restaurant reviews for my Southern California newspaper, but my passion is for the novel. And I love to help other writers find their way, so I teach novel writing and edit fiction manuscripts on a freelance basis. My plotting how-to, Plot Your Way to Publication, a step-by-step method for building a storyline, is available on my website along with writing and editing tips:

I'm only a few pages away from finishing this book and so far not totally impressed. It was a pretty easy read and the story kept me interested. But to me a lot of what the main character does is questionable. Why didn't she report the assault by Rick at the open house?!! I thought the whole "Terry" thing very creepy. There's no way I would've jumped into that relationship so quickly...he was borderline stalking her at the beginning. Then there were the explicit sex scenes...I'm no prude...but the author went into way too much detail in some of the scenes. Overall, not too bad for a free book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lesson In Living, June 11, 2011

I had my doubts about this book from the description. I usually don't go for the sad stories, but in this case I'm so very glad I read it. Lisa was my type of character from beginning to finish. She didn't just follow along with some male, she didn't fall back depend on others yet she also showed a real human side. The author showed us it's okay to be mad at the ones we love, to question everything and find out how to live and love on our own. This story had everything from betrayal to true love, all without staying in a stereotype. Loved it and definitely look forward to reading more from this author.

I don't quite know where to start with this review because there was just so much in this book that was "off". The main character was such a weak person most of the time yet she had a co-worker that was at least 10 years younger who couldn't stand it that she wouldn't jump into bed with him? Plus a man she meets who immediately falls in love with her. She must really be something...yet she's not. She loses her husband and immediately falls "in love" with this man who keeps calling her. Yet, all they really do is have sex. All the time. In intimate detail. I really didn't need to know every little thing. People do still have imaginations although many writers, like movie producers, think we need to have every last detail of what goes on. If there was actual love between Lisa and Terry, I didn't see it.

From close to the beginning, it was obvious what was going to happen with Jenna and Marsh. Again, these characters weren't likeable or intelligent in any way.

A big deal was made about Lisa and how she dressed to look successful. She also acted proper. Yet there were a couple of times she cussed which didn't fit her character at all. It was just kind of tossed in there. And for being so proper it made no sense that she wouldn't report Rick. Plus they called 911, left her car there, and no one contacted her? There were quite a few things like that which made no real sense.

At the end, after finally settling things with her daughter, Lisa said she couldn't wait to move near her and enjoy life with her grandchild and grandchild-to-be, yet all of a sudden she switched and told her daughter to expect her when she saw her. She had things to see. What was that all about? Her daughter probably would've told her to go jump in a lake at that point! And no one would blame her. Lisa changed her mind at the drop of a hat. The whole thing with Terry was odd and unbelievable too. The book just seemed to get more outrageous as it went on. At the beginning I felt bad for Lisa but the more I read the less I cared. None of the characters were believable and most were not at all likeable. Glad I didn't pay for this one.
