5.0 out of 5 stars The Introduction Alone Is Worth Reading This Book, June 3, 2000
The Introduction of "Beyond the Quiet Time" is fascinating and if it were the alone part of the book that was any good then I would still have to rate the book a "4 out of 5". "Beyond the Quiet Time" takes modern approaches to Christian spirituality and explains them and makes them practical. Dr. McGrath as the ability to take the difficult and make it understandable. He has taken this ability and used it within the field of Christian Spirituality in order to help people experience God. The Introduction explains the importance of Christian Spirituality and the remaining 5 chapters of the book take you through 5 times of devotion. It is not often that one of the worlds prominent theologians "descends" to the world of personal devotion. I am thankful that Dr. McGrath did!

4.0 out of 5 stars Practical Pointers for a Direct Engagement with the Scriptures, April 19, 2008
In "Beyond the Quiet Time: Alister McGrath presents a refreshing approach to relating the vitality of the scriptures to personal Christian Living. McGrath helps the reader develop a plan which offers a new approach to spirituality.

The book encompasses both a devotional and a theological emphasis on reading, studying, and applying the Scriptures to daily life. The studies bring a new flavor to the "Quiet Time", offering spiritual nourishment, encouragement, and motivation to follow Christ.

The format of the book incorporates possibilities for use in a study group or for individual study. Each of the five chapters include: Narrative, introducing the theme of the chapter, a passage from the Bible, commentary with questions for consideration, a guided time of reflection, discussion points, a "Study Panel," and suggested exercises for meaningful life application.

McGrath writes with clarity as he demonstrates this devotional approach to the Scriptures. He defines spirituality, answers the question as to why it is important, what we can learn from the past, and how the Scripture gives guidance as it relates to everyday life.

The five chapters of the book provide the groundwork for future devotional study and cover the foundational tenets of the Gospel message setting the scene with relevant illustrations that give a contemporary setting for application. These chapters include the concept of being lost, the need and provision of rescue, relationship to the world, faith, and living life to the fullest.

"Beyond the Quiet Time" offers the reader a creative, imaginative way for finding freshness to enhancing their spirituality though a direct engagement with the Scriptures.
