Editorial Reviews

(11-CD box set plus DVD and 400-page hardcover book) After Hitler's seizure of power in 1933, every memory of the sound & voice of Jewish artists was to be consigned to oblivion in the same way as the Yiddish language. In this set, priceless sound documents have been rescued & restored. Some of these titles recorded in Berlin were released in Palestine from 1934-36. The repertoire is wide, and includes classical music, Yiddish comedians, German cabaret, Palestinian folk songs, and above all, cantorial singing of enormous eloquence. The DVD contains the sound film Hebrew Melody (previously believed to be lost and now presented here for the first time) featuring violinist Andreas Weissgerber. The deluxe 400-page hardcover book is presented in both German & English.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Set!!, April 6, 2011

This review is from: Beyond Recall: A Record of Jewish Musical Life in Nazi Berlin, 1933-1938 (Audio CD)
This set was given me by two friends with whom I share and interest and love of Jewish music. It is one of the most fantastic collections I have ever seen and what a pleasure to have a copy.

The large (and very heavy) book has a complete history of the recordings including how they were located. It is very complete regarding the artists who recorded during this period and a storehouse of vital information regarding each artist and the recordings themselves. As always, with the Bear label, the CD's are immaculate in their pressing and presentation. There are 278 recordings on 10 CD's and a DVD of historical interest. There are too many pieces to discuss individually. I am not Jewish and no expert in this area, but am drawn to this music in a way I am unable to explain. I feel no explanation is needed when the soul is touched.

It could not have been easy for the artists or technicians to record this music in such a dangerous and difficult atmosphere, but record they did. We owe to them a debt of gratitude for preserving this moving and beautiful music which could so easily have been lost.

The Bear label should be highly commended for preserving and making available this historic collection of some of the music of a great people.
