Editorial Reviews

Review

Ewing doesn't strike me as a man who's in love with calculators and analytical chemistry. He's a horse lover. He speaks our language and he's a practical man. On matters of equine nutrition, he cuts to the chase....Ewing hands it to you on a silver platter and makes it downright palatable. I particularly liked the chapter on minerals, which, in my opinion, is the biggest black hole in the average horseman's nutritional knowledge.... Buy this book, and read it. --Horse & Rider magazine

This gem of a paperback is a treasure trove of facts about what every horse-keeper needs to know about feeding horses. Years as CEO of an equine feed company gave him the fodder to write this handy little reference book, suitable for greenhorns and weathered trail hands alike -- healthy doses of common sense interspersed with science make it very palatable and easy to digest. --In & Around Horse Country

Practical and easy to understand, this helpful book has a new edition with more information and the latest details on equine nutrition. Supplementation has become an art, and Ewing brings you up-to-date with the latest on glucosamine, fatty acids and many other natural supplements. If your feed room looks like a health food store, this book might help you make better use of some of that inventory. The new edition lives up to my opinion of the original version: 'This fascinating and folksy book takes a very dry subject and makes it interesting. For those not seeking a doctorate in equine nutrition, this book pretty well covers what we need to know.' The book has a tremendous amount information to offer. --Horse Illustrated magazine --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

About the Author

Rex A. Ewing grew up in northeastern Colorado's Platte valley, where he spent most of his time looking after the family's herds of Charolais cattle and Thoroughbred horses. He learned early about the importance of proper feeding since, in addition to the purebred stock, the Ewing Ranch operated an experimental feedlot for horses, cattle and sheep, where his father, John, tested the efficacy of different feeds and additives. Following college, Rex returned to life on the ranch, managing the horse operation and assisting his father in the family's horse nutrition business. When John Ewing died in 1990, Rex became president and CEO of the John Ewing Company, a world-renowned producer of horse nutrition products. Combining his years of common-sense experience with the scientific particulars of horse nutrition, he formulated a number successful products, wrote regularly for horse publications, and talked to thousands of horse owners about their nutrition related problems. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

More About the Author

Rex Ewing was born and raised in the heart of northern Colorado's ranching country and true to form he grew up in the company of mixed-blood horses, Charolais cattle, and the large herd of Corriedale sheep his father John imported from Australia. In addition to his time on the ranch, he spent four years at Colorado State University, two seasons mining placer gold in California and Alaska, and a couple of stints on his brother's cattle ranch in Costa Rica. He also lived for seven years in a crude mountain cabin, casting gold jewelry, hand hewing log cabins, and roofing houses whenever money was tight.

When his father suffered a heart attack in 1984, Rex returned to the ranch which, in the intervening years, had been transformed into a Thoroughbred breeding and training facility. For six years he managed the ranch and hay farming operations, and when John Ewing died in 1990 he took over the family's horse nutrition business. It was a serendipitous career move for Rex, for it was while in the role of businessman that he met the love of his life, LaVonne, a freelance graphic designer hoping to do design work for his company. She got the job, for life. Four years later they married and moved onto a small acreage where they raised hay, pastured a few horses and dreamed up a future together.

Rex penned his first published book in 1997, a small treatise on horse nutrition. Beyond the Hay Days: Refreshingly Simple Horse Nutrition quickly became a bestseller. His premiere novel, Eyes of the Lioness, soon followed. A year later, after considerable planning and preparation, Rex and LaVonne divested themselves of their flatland holdings, packed up their cat and two dogs, and moved into a rustic off-grid cabin Rex had built on his mountain property several years before. Small and charming but lacking most modern conveniences, the cabin became their home for the next two years while, working entirely alone, they transformed a truckload of dead trees into a simple yet stylish log home.

Rex and LaVonne chronicled their log-building and off-grid experiences in Logs, Wind and Sun, a down-to-earth book which became very popular within the log-home and renewable-energy communities. Rex followed up with Power with Nature, a book for off grid neophytes, and Got Sun? Go Solar, a primer of grid-tied solar- and wind-electric systems which he wrote with friend and fellow writer, Doug Pratt.

Hydrogen: Hot Stuff Cool Science was Rex's first full-length foray into experimental writing. Employing an irascible wizard and a fanciful setting known as the Wasserstoff Farm, Rex embraced the difficult science of hydrogen energy in an imaginative tour de force that found quick acceptance with science teachers and Wall Street advisors alike.

The updated 2nd edition of Logs, Wind and Sun was released as Crafting Log Homes Solar Style; 2nd editions of the other renewable energy titles have also been released, thanks to the popularity of green energy.

Rex and LaVonne continue to work and create from their secluded mountain home. Though always in the midst of a book project, Rex still finds time to write regularly for Log Home Living and Countryside magazines.

5.0 out of 5 stars A proper feeding reference for all horse owners, January 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Beyond the Hay Days. A Refreshingly Simple Guide to Effective Horse Nutrition. (Paperback)
Much more is involved in optimum feeding of a horse than several flakes of hay, a mineral block, and can of grain. Rex Ewing approaches horse nitrition in a thorough, comprehensive manner by explaining the role and importance of nutrients from carbohydrates, fat, and protein to macro and trace minerals to vitamins. He discusses nutritional requirements and the effects of proper and improper nutrition on the maintenance horse, performance horse, stallion, brood mare, nursing foal, weanlings, and yearlings. Whether your horse is healthy or its coat lacks luster, or it displays a loss of appetite or energy, or a weight loss; this book will be helpful. Summary charts are provided throughout and provide a valualbe reference and summary tool. Rex's extensive background and research can benefit the new as well as the veteran horse owner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thank heavens--no hocus pocus!, December 29, 1999
This review is from: Beyond the Hay Days. A Refreshingly Simple Guide to Effective Horse Nutrition. (Paperback)
This book offers a very simple, concise look at feeding horses, with an emphasis on SIMPLE. Forage is kept as the cornerstone of the equine diet, and a simple look at protein and mineral requirements is given. Written with U.S. horseowners in mind, this book differs from many books based in the UK, where grain types are much different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes horse nutrition simple., May 18, 2004
By A Customer
This is an excellent book on horse nutrition. It makes nutrition easy to understand and information is presented in an easy to read format. Nutrition concepts (such as protein, fat, carbohydrates, ATP, enzmymes, minerals, vitamins, etc.) and how they are metabolized by the horse are explained. Also included is a chapter dedicated to MSM, DMG, Chondroitin Sulfates, Glucosamine, and Bromelain. The book details how much protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, etc. your type of horse needs (broken down into maintenance horse, pregnancy, lactating, growing, performance, or stallion) and how your horse's health, care and general condition contribute to his ability to absorb these nutrients. Each chapter includes charts highlighting the information presented. Additionally, at the end of the book are charts and formulas to help you determine exactly how much your horse needs of each nutrient and how much he is currently receiving in his diet. They were very easy to use, and this will allow you to see where his diet is deficient. This is a great book for the horse owner who is interested in horse nutrition, wants to optimize what he is feeding his horse, and is curious as to the benefits (or not) of all those supplements on the market.

While you can purchase either the paperback or hardcover here on amazon, if you go to the publisher (www.pixyjackpress.com), the author will sign the book for you. It's a nice touch.
