Book Description

August 2006
Using the right phrase at the right moment can make all the difference! It can generate real interest in you, provoke more questions, and show an interviewer that you are the right person for the job. The same applies to written communications such as letters or emails and to voice mail messages. Like learning a foreign language, these phrases, when practiced carefully and used properly, become natural and powerful techniques by which to express ones self. The advice, materials and phrases in Beyond the Resume arm you with appropriate actions to take and phrases to use. It is not the intent of the book to "prop you up" to sound like something you are not. Instead, it is to help you speak to your strengths, experiences, and job know-how. The book is a "soup to nuts" kind of book and takes you from the point of initial contact with the hiring authority, through interviewing, and on to closing the deal.

Beyond the Resume offers advice on all phases of a job search, including:

• Developing a resume • Writing letters • Cold-calling companies and recruiters • Leaving voice mail • Managing the interview • Responding to trick and non-relevant questions • And post interview correspondence

You will be armed with powerful and provoking phrases which catch the listener's or reader’s interest and enable you to follow up with meaningful information, rather than just being glib or using buzz-words.

Each chapter covers a different scenario or set of circumstances in which using the right phrases will pay off for you. Rational will be discussed, dos and don'ts highlighted, and advice given on how to construct and use the phrases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the tongue-tied, August 29, 2011
This review is from: Beyond the Resume: A Comprehensive Guide to Making the Right Impression Through E-mail, Cover Letters, Resumes, and Pre-Interviews (Paperback)
If words aren't your thing, then this is the book for you. The authors offer key phases and scripts to use when writing resumes, cover letters, emails and more. The resume section is a little weak; it does not discuss key words for computer scanning, but there are other resume writing books for that. I especially like the phone scripts as I am good putting words down on paper but have a hard time finding the right words when I am on the phone. There are scripts for cold calling, voice mail messages and follow-up calls as well as networking and interviewing. The authors also offer phrases that "bridge generations" which is helpful in a multi-generational workplace. Written in 2007, the only thing missing are phrases for tweeting and blogging, but there is enough good information in this little book that it should transfer to any new media that comes along.
