As a child, as I heard the songs and stories of the ancient days of Israel and the journey of the Israelites, they were always a part of me. Through my journey to adulthood, as the stories of my ancestors weaved in and out of my being, they finally opened their secret door and whispered to me, as I first touched Jerusalem’s walls in the city of old. With tears in my eyes, beholding the wonder of the Dead Sea Scrolls, I could almost imagine my ancient ancestor writing with his pen, reaching out his hand. At the edge of the Negev Desert, my heart pounding with images of the vast wanderings of tribes searching for home, I hold the harp to my ears and listen.

I was surprised. This music is really very beautiful. The songs vary in style, but still flow together so pleasantly. It's everything "authentic" Jewish music should be: hopeful, sad, fun, and sweet. I'm so glad I bought it.

I never write reviews but as I was listening to this CD for about the one-thousandth time today, I thought of how much enjoyment Helfand's CD has brought me over the years. The compositions are beautiful, varied (some upbeat, some more reflective) and are expertly played (Helfand is a great harpist). I agree with both of the other reviews on this site: yes, it is "easy listening," but also it does evoke something of an ancient Middle East.
I love it!

I enjoyed this CD for easy-listening; it's good for hearing when there is quiet and one can really listen to it. It doesn't have any "hooks," so it requires that listening where things come on their own. It's good for quiet times because it is beautiful.
