Book Description

Beyond Seaside is Book One in an absorbing tale of adventure for readers ten and up. It incorporates fantasy, humor, and plenty of suspense. The characters are vibrant and likable (except, of course, for those who aren’t).

The story follows Will, who awakens one day to the worst kind of identity crisis: he is alone in the wilderness with no recollection of how he got there, or even of anyone he’s ever known. Awash in confusion, he sets out in search of civilization and answers. He finds civilization first. The colorful village of Seaside sits snug between the mountains and the sea. In Seaside, everyone knows everyone else—but none of them admits to knowing Will. It doesn’t help that he has emerged from a forest all sensible people know to avoid, or that odd happenings seem to trail him like a shadow.

A cynical widow named Marna offers him board in exchange for labor. One of her sons—insecure, peevish Brenner—tries his hardest to make Will’s life miserable. But his older brother, Jornan, becomes Will’s most valued friend. Will also finds a friend in Jornan’s gregarious cousin, Kye, and in a runaway girl (Pascal) who is hiding in a ruin north of town.

As time passes, he decides he doesn’t much want to know his identity, after all. He has good reason to suspect he wouldn’t like it. He also suspects that at least one person in Seaside does know it. When a magnificent ship arrives in the village harbor, a sinister plan comes to light; and Will is forced to flee for his life. Jornan, Kye, and Pascal join him, each for a different reason.

The four escape into a land of legends—the forests and the mountains beyond Seaside. Here they evade pursuers, meet a good-hearted woodland tribe, and encounter a perilous enchantress. They make their way to the great walled city of Alton. Alton is easy enough to get into; getting out is quite another matter.

All the while, Will moves closer and closer to the truth…whether he likes it, or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars A solid fantasy of venturing into the unknown November 7, 2008
The scariest thing of all is the thing that you don't know about. "Beyond Seaside" is a story of the unknown. Will finds himself in Seaside, with little idea of whom he is. With little other choice, he tries to begin life anew, but it seems whatever past he has doesn't want to allow him to do that. He and the few people he has to call friends see the best solution is the leave Seaside, and find that it's a terrifying endeavor in itself. "Beyond Seaside" is a solid fantasy of venturing into the unknown, recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging and filled with adventure August 6, 2008
Format:Kindle Edition
Beyond Seaside appeals to many ages. I enjoyed the characters and their relationships immensely. My two teenage boys fought over the book at night to see who could finish it! My 15 year-old says it is one of the best reads he's ever experienced. The homey house in the woods is haunting, a vision that I can't forget. The friendships are rich and realistic. Great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Found this rare gem by accident. Treasure! April 14, 2012
By T. Noel
Format:Kindle Edition
I came across this book quite by accident as I searched for titles by my favorite author, CS Lewis. As I read the first chapter, I honestly thought I was reading a book by him. I figured it was a rare hidden gem I had simply missed previously. I was shocked when I looked again at the cover to see it was not his work. I realized I was hooked and had to keep reading. Well, I loved it so much, the minute I finished it, I purchased the second book, "Road to Havla."

I love the adventure, mystery, and romance throughout the book. The writing is so descriptive and rich. You will not be disappointed until you reach the end when you find yourself compelled to buy the next book. Very like CS Lewis' Narnia books, I loved every word. "Beyond Seaside" finds itself at home resting next to my copies of "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" and the like. Thank you for the gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, creative, adventurous! August 14, 2008
While reading this book, my 10 year-old nephew said it was like a "video playing before my eyes." In other words, it is very descriptive and easily captures the imagination. The plot is very compelling, with a young man coming out of the blackness of the forest and knowing very little about who he is or where he came from. And the characters are well-developed; I especially loved the strength of the main female character. She is a champion archer who disguises herself so she can compete against the boys at the festival.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beyound Seaside October 18, 2008
I found this book to be very captivating. This is a well told story that intrigued my attention from beginning to end. It contains beautiful imagery with fast paced adventure. The over all flow and imagery is beautiful. Fantastic characters that are filled with great depth and reality to the point that I feel that I know them. This book is a fine example of the marriage between great adventure and depth of it's characters.

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book was such a great read! I had a really hard time putting it down; had time allowed, I could have finished it in one sitting. More than anything, I loved the way the author helped me know each character. They were brought to life for me and I came to really care about them!

Beyond Seaside has it all - mystery, intrigue, action, strong characters, AND a message worth remembering. It's a great book for kids, but adults will also find it compelling and hard to put down. Thana Rolph

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for ages 10 - 12
Fun, easy to read fantasy, built for the age group. A good deal of good natured humour. The only thing that strikes me as unconvincing (remember it is fantasy and this duology has... Read more

It was quite a good read, except when I got to the end. I wish
Authors would learn to fade out and not just end a book abruptly. Otherwise I liked this book.
