5.0 out of 5 stars Turned my son's life around
I was desperate for anything that could help with the social disorder that was destroying my son's life. No book, no therapist, no method seemed to help my son. Finally, Beyond Shyness was recommended to me by a friend whose child had suffered from the same crippling disorder. First I read the book with the hope that I could aid my son in his process. Then I let my...

1.0 out of 5 stars very harmful reading
If you are shy, I strongly recommend that you NOT read this book. While it WILL make you more aware of the unconscious processes that cause the social anxiety in you, it will not help you overcome them in the slightest. The suggestions encourage you to focus-- no, OBSESS-- over these processes, causing worsened self-esteem. I would recommend any book in the field of...

5.0 out of 5 stars Turned my son's life around, August 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Beyond Shyness: How to Conquer Social Anxieties (Paperback)
Then I let my son read it. But the book managed to take on a life of it's own and managed to bring my son to a place where he began to have the desire to deal with his problem. Eventually, he started to see a local therapist and he is now on his way to curing his problem. Even though the reading of the book took place well over a year ago, it was in truth the catalyst that jumpstarted my son's recovery.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredibly helpful book, July 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Beyond Shyness: How to Conquer Social Anxieties (Paperback)
I have suffered from social phobia for over 30 years. In that time, I have read many books on the subject and none has ever aided me the way that this book did. I strongly recommend it to those who are able to acknowledge the fact that they have a problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book saved me, August 23, 2004
This review is from: Beyond Shyness: How to Conquer Social Anxieties (Paperback)
With this book and the Beyond Shyness self-help audio program, I pulled myself up out of a world of shame and guilt and frustration into a world of logic, compassion and clarity at a level I've never knew existed. I have a totally new understanding of my fellow man and have virtually rid myself of the critical, judgmental mindset that used to isolate me from anyone knew.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book gave me hope, August 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Beyond Shyness: How to Conquer Social Anxieties (Paperback)
I have kept my shyness hidden for many years, partially because I was embarressed and partially because I couldn't acknowledge it to myself. Berent (the author) helped me to acknowledge that a problem exists and then through further reading I was able to learn various methods to help conquer it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tools to overcome your fears - and then some., August 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Beyond Shyness: How to Conquer Social Anxieties (Paperback)
Most self-help books out there for "shys" focus on one or two things you could do to become more relaxed in social situations. This one gives ALL the ideas, helps you formulate a plan of action, points out common, unconscious things social phobics do to hinder their progress, and empowers you to take control of your life and live the life you want. It is one of the most complete and helpful books on social phobia I have read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, August 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Beyond Shyness: How to Conquer Social Anxieties (Paperback)
Most books and authors are consumed by their own theories and narrow-mindedness. This book though allowed for a more complete picture of social anxiety to shine through. I would strongly recommend this book to others who suffer from shyness and want to get beyond it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, April 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Beyond Shyness: How to Conquer Social Anxieties (Paperback)
I high recommend this book. Author notes the underlying causes of the problem. Then list all of the fears one can face(very authoritive exprience). And finally steps you through to overcome the problem. Very practicable. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Success Story, June 27, 2006
This review is from: Beyond Shyness: How to Conquer Social Anxieties (Paperback)
This book helped me tremendously. A large part was how Berent gets you to look at yourself and understand that this is a behavior that can be changed through self-analysis and practice. I read the book about 3 years ago. Before that, I, without really knowing it, avoided social situations or talking in front of people at work. This was hindering my career. Once I realized this, using the book, I planned a change in behavior and started to overcome some of my fears. This lead to a promotion about 2 years ago, and then, near the end of last year, I was able to seize a once in a lifetime opportunity to start my own business. So far, so good! Thanks Jon!

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book, September 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Beyond Shyness: How to Conquer Social Anxieties (Paperback)
Being a senior in college, I decided to write a thesis that dealt with my major of Behavioral Psychology. Indeed, I began work on the subject of shyness and social depression and started to read all of the books that I could find on the topic. In terms of pure information this book was the not the best, but in terms of helping to lift the spirits of the reader, I give this book full honors. I am not shy, but I believe this book can help people who are.

i have read this book some months ago and its impression is still on me.when i have to make a decisuion i also think what this book will advice me.i had been a SP/SAD many years and read a lot of books and this is ,i think ,one of the 3 best . its style isnt too clinicaly . it also help me to understand things that related to other problem of mine which i didnt knew that i suffer from (dependent personality). when you read it doesnt make you to fill that you have a defect in your brain but that you have some wrong behavior that you have to change(for your own good). it also have good advices for parents of shy people-something that i didnt see in other books.
