Of the 28 tracks here, 16 are previously unreleased, and the rest are extensively reworked with "new timbres." Consequently "Beyond The Storm" comes off less as a compilation than as a whole new album based upon old themes. If you're a fan of Froese or TD this is a nice slice of that pie.
However not all of Edgar's frequent excesses are reined in -- there are some interminable guitar solos, some questionable sequences, and at almost two and a half hours you're likely to tire of it well before it's over.
Plus, the liner notes -- a hagiographic "essay" by Mark Prendergast -- had me howling in the aisles. He correctly recounts the lack of chart success of Edgar's solo work, but his explanations range from plausible (out of favor in a punk market) to howlingly implausible (released at the same time as a Steve Miller Band album which took all the wind out of its sails). A much better survey of the Dream's journey, both highs AND lows, can be had inside the "Dream Sequence" compilation on Virgin.
Still, this set deserves at least 3 stars for its careful assembly, gorgeous graphics, and a healthy dollup of Edgar's best work. It's bargain priced as well.

This 1995 2-CD compilation of tracks by Tangerine Dream supremo Edgar Froese acts as both a vast overall survey of 20 years of solo output and also as one last wrap-up solo album for Virgin.

Generally speaking, the music on these discs embraces a fair mish-mash of styles, covering as it does so many periods of Froese's life. Indeed, in many ways these discs seem intent on demonstrating how wide-ranging a composer Froese has been in his time, while at the same time pointing up just where he currently stands, musically.

I would say that for most listeners, the material on these two discs has been too much worked over and is much too over-worked to be of any real interest, though. However, there is undoubtedly sufficient here to make this release an essential purchase for the confirmed Froesian. Fans of softer New Age electronic music may also find much of this of interest. Others-especially those who prefer Tangerine Dream's early music, or indeed, heavier later music-may do better to shy away.

[LATER NOTE: The 2003 4-CD series The Ambient Highway offers all but two of the tracks from this collection in somewhat better mixes, leaving this release without very much purpose at all.]

This is an impressive collection that contains 16 unreleased tracks and 12 re-mixed numbers from the solo career of Edgar Froese.

Froese seems to take special pride in working to "perfect" material at a given signpost in time. Spanning two discs, this is an excellent way to become acquainted with the moveable canvas of this surrealist artist.

I had heard a cut or two from this CD on satellite radio. Since this is a 2 CD set I figured that there would probably be quite a few cuts that I would not like. However, I was pleased to find that there are no cuts that I do not like. If you are a fan of Tangerine Dream or any of the many, similar artists, I would highly recommend this collection.

This 2 CD set is really great music. CD #1 is my favorite though from beginning to the last song.
This music is so nice to listen to while in traffic. I mean listening to this music I forget all about being in a hurry, and I just enjoy the drive. The music is really relaxing to listen to, one of the songs resembles a song by David Arkenstone. I really enjoy this type of music and if you like this type of music this CD will deffinately have a spot in your collection. Sirrius satilite has a station called CHILL & another called SPA. they both play some of this type of music. That's where I heard the song Walkabout which lead me to purchase this great collection in the first place.
