Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA Early on, Provost says that this book is aimed at those who have ``done a good deal of writing, and perhaps published some of it.'' While that profile may not fit many high-school students, schools with a large writing program may find this how-to book valuable. Written in a breezy, conversational style, its easy readability is likely to appeal to students looking for a non-textbook writing manual. Some of the topics are covered by Strunk and White in Elements of Style , but others, such as pace and tension, apply particularly to longer fiction and nonfiction writings. The section on originality is helpful, as is the part on how to avoid stereotypes. There are some suggested exercises, but many readers will look only at the parts that describe what they are having trouble with, repair manual style. The index is adequate but suffers from the use of jargon like ``luggage'' and ``plants'' which average students may not know. In addition, all excerpts of published and non-published works used as examples are indexed by author, which is not useful as some come from struggling writers who have written to Provost for help. The book will be a good follow-up to Peter Elbow's Writing Without Teachers (Oxford, 1973). Carolyn Praytor Boyd, Episcopal High School, Bellaire

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn the fine points of writing from the best, July 15, 2002
This review is from: Beyond Style: Mastering the Finer Points of Writing (Hardcover)
Style is something that's easy to recognize in someone else's writing, not so easy to see in your own. Provost's book addresses things like the relationship between form and content, proportion and spacing, slant and theme, spinning a "spell," how to weave the reader's dream -- the hard stuff that writers hope will happen but often don't know how to create.

This book is the best and it's from one of the finest writing teachers around, who is sadly missed since his death a couple of years ago.

Writers of fiction and nonfiction alike will benefit from it. It teaches skills that will set your writing apart from everyone else's. Provost gives the writer control over the material.

By A Customer
This review is from: Beyond Style: Mastering the Finer Points of Writing (Hardcover)
A great help for intermediate writers. Gary Provost gives meaningful examples as well as detailed instructions for good writing. The subtitle for this book is 'Mastering the Finer Points of Writing - Form, Tone, Subtlety, Pacing, Tension, Metaphor, Theme, Viewpoint, Slant, Flashbacks and Many Others.'

He delivers on all points.

5.0 out of 5 stars A HOW-TO-WRITE MASTERPIECE, June 11, 2006
This review is from: Beyond Style: Mastering the Finer Points of Writing (Hardcover)
If you're serious about becoming a writer, buy this book. There are a zillion how to write tomes out there, and to be very honest, most of them are confusing. I know this because I've bought hundreds of these books. Until I found this one.

Too bad it's out of print. I wish Writer's Digest would re-issue it.
