Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This is a dream project inspired by memories of my love of space exploration and reading clippings on the NASA landings with my Grandma Melson throughout her life. Sometimes I wonder if our sense of wonder has faded these days. Did space travel become too commonplace for some? So I asked top Science Fiction and Fantasy writers, including four of my favorites, to imagine space colonization in various forms. It was funded on Kickstarter, then picked up by Fairwood Press, a top independent SFF publisher.  I think the result is a lot of fun. I hope you'll agree.

Contributors in Table of Contents order: Nancy Kress, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Jamie Todd Rubin, Brad R. Torgersen, Alex Shvartsman, Autumn Rachel Dryden, Jean Johnson, Jason Sanford, Cat Rambo, Simon C. Larter, Jennifer Brozek, Maurice Broaddus, Jaleta Clegg, Erin Hoffman, Anthony R. Cardno, Nancy Fulda, Robert Silverberg, Mike Resnick

3 reprints (Dryden, Sanford, Silverberg), the rest entirely original.

From the Back Cover

"Jack Williamson used to say that spaceflight was to science fiction what the Trojan war was to the Greeks. In recent years, myth is being replaced by the pragmatic, and this insightful anthology demonstrates that truth." --James Gunn, SFWA Grandmaster

"Beyond the Sun mixes courage, redemption, and stark terror in tales of distant worlds. Buckle in."
--Jack McDevitt, author of Firebird

"Thomas Wolfe said, 'You can't go home again,' but in this thoughtful, exciting collection of stories about mankind's push to the stars, we see that we take the attributes with us that make us human. A wonderful collection of space-faring stories that reminds us that all we can depend on when we explore the universe is the unexpected."
--James Van Pelt, author of Summer of the Apocalypse

"This is science fiction doing what only science fiction can do--pushing us out past the warm envelope of our biosphere, exploring our ultimate destiny as a species. A truly phenomenal collection."

--Ted Kosmatka, author of The Prophet of Bones

I sometimes find it hard to write a review about anthologies because I want to speak to each story, and no one is likely to read a review that long. (That said, if you want to, I've done exactly that over on Goodreads.)

Put far more succinctly, however, I'll say this: Beyond the Sun has the perfect balance between holding to the theme of places and cultures far-flung from our own Earth in some way, while still delighting in a huge breadth of tone and feel and narrative with what the authors did with that theme. From the opening tale (Nancy Kress and the wonderful "Migration") to the closing one (Mike Resnick and the flat-out-funny "Observation Post") you should be prepared to be moved, disturbed, moved to tears, disturbed again a few times, impressed by clever twists and unique takes on old SF Tropes, and also to laugh out loud throughout this ride of SF at its best.

Special hat-tip to Anthony Cardno's "Chasing Satellites" and also "Soaring Pillar of Brightness," by Nancy Fulda - those two were personal favorites of mine. Cardno for putting such a casual spin on a tight theme of 'Family First' and Fulda for taking the "awful discovery about an alien culture" trope and turning it on its head.

There wasn't a story in this collection I didn't enjoy, and that's saying pretty much the highest thing I can say about an anthology.

This excellent new anthology mixes seasoned science fiction veterans with new authors, and provivides mostly new stories with a smattering of reprints. The Kristine Ketherine Rusch story and the humorous Mike Resnick worked well ( in a slight way) as did those of rising stars Brad Torgerson and Kat Rambo. This is a selection of real science fiction in a field increasingly swamped with fantasy stories and romance masquerading as SF. I look forward to more anthologies from Schmidt, who seems to have found a niche as an editor.

I love this anthology. And I have to say, I'm normally not much of a short story reader. If it's not Harlan Ellison or Ray Bradbury, I'm usually not interested. But this anthology features some of the best writing by today's writers that I've come across lately. Overall, the writing is solid, the characters in the various stories are well executed, and the variety of scenarios in the stories was impressive. From a look at Amish vs. sci-fi enhanced culture, to an otherworldly penal colony, to a sci-fi version of the Exodus, and more... Seriously, I didn't expect to get such variety in the anthology and so I was pleasantly surprised by that. My favorite story is "Flipping the Switch” by Jamie Todd Rubin because it was not only so well written, but man, I had never thought about space travel and space piloting in the way Rubin addresses it. Moving human stories throughout. The editor did a good job pulling the selection of stories together, and I highly recommend this. It's worth the money if you like good SF.
