Editorial Reviews

Review

Ahmed's book wasn't even off the press yet when it started making waves in the Muslim community. -- Ritz, Honolulu Advertiser, September 2, 2002

About the Author

Saleem Ahmed was born in India (1939), raised in Pakistan, and now lives in Hawaii. He considers all three his home. He earned his M.S. degree in Geology at the University of Karachi in 1961 and his doctorate in Soil Science from the University of Hawaii in 1965, on a scholarship awarded by the East-West Center. The other "degree" he obtained in Hawaii was his wife, the former Carol Matsumoto, nicknamed Yasmin (after her Japanese name, Yasuko). Returning to Pakistan in 1965 with Yasmin, Saleem first taught soil science at the University of Karachi, then spent the next eight years with the Esso Pakistan Fertilizer Co., Ltd. – in which capacity he participated in research and development leading to Pakistan’s "Green Revolution." His last position with the Company was as Technical Services Advisor. Saleem spent the next 22 years with the East-West Center, Honolulu, and led their Botanical Pest Control project. Currently he works as a financial consultant in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Saleem’s diverse publications include: BEYOND VEIL AND HOLY WAR: Islamic Teachings and Muslim Practices with Biblical Comparisons (Moving Pen Publishers, 2002); Scrabble(R) Word-Building Book, co-authored with his wife and both daughters (Pocket Books, Simon & Schuster, 1991); Handbook of Plants with Pest-Control Properties, co-authored with Michael Grainge (John Wiley & Sons, New York, 1988); and Agriculture-Fertilizer Interface in Asia: Issues of Growth and Sustainability (Oxford & IBH Publishers, New Delhi, 1995). He has contributed chapters to several professional publications, including the National Research Council’s book NEEM: A Tree for Solving Global Problems (National Academy Press, Washington, DC, 1992).

Saleem teaches courses on Islam and Financial Planning at the University of Hawaii and elsewhere in the community. His multi-cultural outlook inspired him to conceive of Milun (‘the meeting’): Association for Promoting South Asian Culture ( which brings together people from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka to share their common cultural heritage with others) and the One-Talk Club (which helps people learn to appreciate other cultures and value systems). As a "poet-in-training," Saleem wrote the lyrics to the song Dhoond raha hoon (which in Urdu and Hindi means "I am searching"), included in the CD Dil-e-Ruba produced by Blue Rains, a Honolulu-based music production group. Very much a "people person" Saleem enjoys learning about others and trying to see the world from their perceptions of reality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very bright and well researched book!, July 12, 2005
This review is from: Beyond Veil and Holy War (Hardcover)
It has been a while that I haven't read a book that I was impressed with. Unlike many other popular fanatic books about Islam, this one was written with a broad perspective about all religions. It shines the light over the fact that all religions started out having the same purpose: They all have an intrinsic value. It is a very easy reading, well researched, open minded, and yet has some scholarly facts. I would highly recommend this for anyone interested in learning about Islam and also for all the Muslims out there. This book makes you reflect on what the core of the religion is and what some people make of it. Islam is a holy religion and it is unfortunate that sometimes it is portrayed by some people who speak ignorantly about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A particularly good resource for American readers, March 6, 2003
This review is from: Beyond Veil and Holy War (Hardcover)
Beyond Veil And Holy War: Islamic Teachings And Muslim Practices With Biblical Comparisons by educator and author Saleem Ahmed is a thoughtful, informative survey of Islamic teachings and the words of the Qur'an itself. Written in question-and-answer format, Beyond Veil And Holy War studies the holy book of Islam and comes to the conclusion that in Islam itself, righteous actions are far more important than spoken prayers, and that some of the purported actions and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (especially the sexist and violent ones which appear to contradict the Qur'an) may not be as authentic as some consider. A fascinating and highly recommended addition to Islamic studies reference shelves, Beyond Veil And Holy War is a particularly good resource for American readers to learn more about the core nature of Islam.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, the truth!, March 15, 2003

This review is from: Beyond Veil and Holy War (Hardcover)
I am an American Muslim woman, and I was thrilled to read Dr. Ahmed's book. Islam IS a feminist religion which embraces all people, and Dr. Ahmed looks directly at the Koranic text to prove so. Every Muslim and non-muslim should read this book. It's so well written and very easy for a non-religion scholar to follow. Bravo! I'll look forward to more books by this author.
