About the Author

Syvlia Clute holds graduate degrees from UC Berkeley, BU School of Law and The Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She speaks to a wide array of professional groups, churches, and spiritual organization. An attorney by training and trade, she has a private practice in Richmond, VA.

More About the Author

As a trial attorney in Richmond, Virginia, Sylvia Clute began her writing career when confronted with a legal system in which justice too often meant vengeance. She became disillusioned with the legal system and felt compelled to search for a better way, a journey that provides depth and substance to her writing. Clute draws on extensive political and civic experience, research and multiple degrees in law and public policy to present a startling vision of new beginnings.

A pioneer in legal reform, she spearheaded changes in Virginia's laws relating to women and children. Her focus is now on legal initiatives that support collaborative and restorative approaches to resolving conflict.

In Destiny Unveiled, Sylvia tackles a vengeance model of justice that permeates our foreign policy, politics, corporate culture and even family life. (Destiny Unveiled is a re-written and much improved version of the 1997 book, Destiny.) Beyond Vengeance, Beyond Duality, her first work of nonfiction, describes two distinct forms of justice, unitive and punitive, and how unitive justice will prevail.

Sylvia served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nepal before beginning her graduate studies. She founded, led and served as an advisor to numerous community and statewide initiatives, ran for statewide office twice, and co-founded the only women's bank in the South. She serves as President of the Restorative Justice Association of Virginia (2009-2010).

She holds an MA in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, a Juris Doctor from Boston University School of Law, and an MA in Public Administration from the University of California at Berkeley.

BEYOND VENGEANCE, BEYOND DUALITY:
A CALL FOR A COMPASSIONATE REVOLUTION

I believe the moment has arrived for a paradigm shift in our thinking about our criminal justice system. We are rooted in concepts of separation and duality that pull us apart, bring about more suffering and create increased violence in our society as a whole.

The extreme costs to our entire nation financially, physically/medically, emotionally, spiritually and in relationships are increasing as we cling to these ineffective, punitive methods of carrying out justice.

Sylvia Clute, a lawyer for thirty-six years, is the author of a recently published book, Beyond Vengeance Beyond Duality: A Call for a Compassionate Revolution (Hampton Roads, May 2010), a new vision for our legal system and, indeed, our society. She describes the new consciousness in terms of "unitive" (instead of "punitive") justice, which makes available opportunities for healing, reconciliation, harmony, closeness, peace and safety.

Examples of where unitive/restorative justice have been instituted demonstrate lowered recidivism rates (from over 60% to less than 10%), less cost for incarceration (a quarter of the cost of traditional treatment programs), reduced violence in our prisons and jails, healthier people returning from prison to our communities and, thus, the entire society benefits. Evidence shows that the inmates exposed to unitive justice transform their attitudes and behavior of criminality (violence, hostility, abusiveness, anger, self-destruction) to those of respect, honesty, integrity and trust. They become more self-reliant and healthy, responsible community members.

I highly recommend this hopeful, compelling book to you as a way to support us in bringing about the compassionate revolution in our justice system and society, now.

Sylvia Clute is one of the world's strongest leaders in Restorative and Unitive Justice. Currently the United States is under 5% of the Earth's population but houses over a third of its prisoners and growing exponentially as we speak. 1 out of 100 citizens in the US is behind bars, not to mention the "New Jim Crow" that attorney Michelle Alexander illuminates. It is becoming much more common knowledge that the criminal justice system, mostly privatized and bought out by such corporate-interest motivated profit machines such as Correctional Corporations of America (CXW on the NYSE) is NOT at all about reformation, empowerment, education, and "correction"---but rather, and most basely, about profit. And only about profit. Recently the privatized corrections companies offered a "deal" to buy out ailing state prisons with the stipulation that they keep the beds 90% full. Reading between the lines isn't hard here. We are at a critical point in our history that spells complete crisis or, opportunity. We have the opportunity to implement systemic change that does not take away accountability, nor is it soft on crime--Restorative and Unitive Justice are about accountability, about addressing the Whole: Victim/s, Perpetrator/s, Community in order to maximize the possibility of true resolution, restoration, and balancing. Our Indigenous of the Earth have practiced forms of RJ for ancient times. Many tribes and communities in our history have shown the power of RJ. Clute provides a powerful tool with this book in removing the stigma of RJ and clearly mapping out why it makes so much more sense than Punitive based systems. We live by the principle of the Golden Rule in theory, but in practice we enact out an Eye for an Eye and think we are lined up with our values and beliefs.Read more ›

Sylvia Clute's book is really amazing!!!

I intend to get more copies to share with colleagues and clients as
the discernment being offered, while very sophisticated, is done with
simple and accessible language, concepts and examples that make sense
to both the mind and heart.

Seriously folks, this book is a powerful teaching and learning tool.
if you haven't picked up a copy I highly recommend doing so.

Sylvia Clute's book touched me deeply. Rather than leaving me feeling overwhelmed and hopeless at the enormity of the problems in our society, I felt uplifted and energized to seek solutions from a new and unifying perspective. Beyond Vengeance, Beyond Duality: A Call for a Compassionate Revolution is an extraordinary book that is truly inspired and inspiring!
