Book Description

June 1998
IF WALLS COULD TALK. . .

The churches of Jerusalem, whether ancient or contemporary, are steeped in that very special aura which surrounds the Holy City. Now, with the publication of Beyond the Walls: Churches of Jerusalem, you can unravel the mysteries which lie underneath each magnificent - or modest - facade. In Beyond the Walls: Churches of Jerusalem, former Jerusalem Post correspondent Aviva Bar-Am offers in-depth narratives, stirring legends, and lively anecdotes which bring 30 of the Holy City's historic churches to life.

Among the sanctuaries and sites vividly described in Beyond the Walls: Churches of Jerusalem are the Church of the Holy Sepulcher (including a step-by-step walk-through guide), St. James' Cathedral, the Church of St. John the Baptist in Ein Kerem (and the Church of St. John the Baptist in the Old City of Jerusalem), the Basilica of the Agony at Gethsemane, and Dominus Flevit. The author, Aviva Bar-Am, also introduces the reader to the Ethiopian Church, the Church of the Visitation, Ecce Homo Basilica, St. Andrew's Church, Mary's Tomb (the Church of the Assumption), the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, the Church of the Flagellation, the Church of St. Alexander Nevsky, and more!

Beyond the Walls: Churches of Jerusalem is the perfect gift for pilgrims planning to visit the Holy Land, and is a wonderful guidebook and souvenir. Even if you can't make the journey, this wonderful text, with its beautiful, full-color photographs, makes an invaluable addition to any home library, and for the armchair traveler and historian.

More About the Author

A native of Minnesota, author Aviva Bar-Am immigrated to Israel in 1968 and has lived in Jerusalem ever since. She holds a degree in social work from the Hebrew University, and during her years as a staff correspondent at the Jerusalem Post published articles on social issues, opened a newspaper hot line for English speakers and had her own Consuming Interest column. But Aviva had fallen in love with her adopted country, and together with her Israeli-born husband, certified tour guide Shmuel Bar-Am, had taken every possible opportunity to travel its length and breadth. Thus the highlight of her work at the Post was a weekly travel column called "Landscapes." Landscapes appeared in the Jerusalem Post Magazine until 1995 and today her columns are found both in the Post's Weekly Magazine and in the local edition: In Jerusalem. Feedback from her readers helped Aviva make the decision to write books about traveling in Israeli. Noting the complete lack of material in English about Jerusalem's wonders, the Golan Heights and the Eastern Galilee, Israel's south, and even wheelchair-accessible sites, she produced Guide to the Golan Heights in 1995. Since then she has written six more engrossing volumes that blend together history, nature and folklore and are brushed with a light, journalistic touch. Her latest book is an update on her first, and includes sites around the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret) and the Galilee itself. When he finds time, Aviva's husband, a professional photographer as well as tour guide, accompanies her on thousands of material-gathering trips around the country. It is he who takes the brilliant photos that enliven her articles, and that add a brilliant touch to her seven books. Aviva and Shmuel have two sabra offspring: Guy and Na'ama.

This review is from: Beyond the Walls: Churches of Jerusalem (Paperback)
Having been in Jerusalem almost two years ago for a wonderful two week course at St. George's College, which is on the grounds of St. George's Cathedral, I was transported in memory back to the churches we explored then, and a few more that we did not have time to explore. The pictures are excellent, though I would wish for more of them for each church, and the descriptions are very well written. I would have loved to have this book with me before I went to Jerusalem. It would have been particularly helpful in exploring The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, with its confusing interior geography and its very complex history. I regret that the book is out of print and hope that it will be re-printed, perhaps slightly updated. It was published in 1998. I ordered the least expensive of the copies being offered second hand, paying about $40. The other second hand copies were being offered at exorbitant prices for a paperback book that is 96 pages long. I'm glad to have mine!
