Book Description

On the planet Kailazh, the challenges confronting the Allied Interstellar Community first contact team far exceed the norm. Yet if dealing with an alien culture is inevitably problematic for explorers setting foot on an unfamiliar world, how much more so must it be for the inhabitants of the planet themselves, who must deal with bizarre realities that collide head-on with their core beliefs?

Kislan is a factor in his family's shipping company, a man who has seen countless ships dock at his home port of Edaru from many different cities, a man who deals daily with foreign goods from around the known world. But the ship that arrives from the stars brings more than exotic innovations, it brings ideas that will reshape his life.

And it brings the beautiful ambassador from the stars, Toni Donato.

Beyond the Waters of the World is a science fiction novella of approximately 23,000 words, or about 60 pages. It is the second book in the Looking Through Lace series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ruth Nestvold is awesome December 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
What the world desperately needs is SF and fantasy written by truly literate folks like Nestvold. This is a novella, and a sequel to another novella. Both are beautifully written and remind me in their style of early Le Guin. She's that good. There is something about these two stories that has a hint of "The Left Hand of Darkness" but I don't mean to say that it's in any way copied or derivative. Just that it has a similar flavor, which is a good thing. Her characters are very well developed and filled out and eminently likable - except for the ones we dislike, at whom one wants to hiss a little. Really a nice read and I rather hope she writes more in this world. One of the best surprises I've had in years of reading and it was more than enough to justify having slogged through a score or three of bad books this year alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars enjoy it May 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I loved the first book and I find this one quite passable. In looking through lace there was so much mystery at every corner, however in this book there's not as many. Aside from experiencing a new culture of course. Another thing that I didn't like about the story and Toni's suddenly change of heart toward Kislan. She found him exotic again after he was sentence to the sea, like really?
Anyway the new culture in the east is much like ours and I could understand why in the western part things were the way they were. Overall I enjoyed the book, I thought that is was going to be more intense so I was quite disappointed in that department. I can't wait to see the "star worlds" through Kislan's eyes :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Xenolinguistics -or- Say That You Really Love Me May 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have finished reading BEYOND THE WATERS OF THE WORLD by Ruth Nestvold: book two of the the LOOKING THROUGH LACE science fiction series.

Book one [LOOKING TROUGH LACE] truly felt like a science fiction work involving xenoanthropology and xenoarcheology of the Planet Christmas [its English name] by a team of First Contact personnel representing the hominid populace of Mars. Book two, however, feels less pure science fiction and more romance.

Involving book one's two main characters, Toni Donato and Kislan, BEYOND pics up where book one left off. Caught in a matriarchal society of male suppression, Toni and Kislan struggle to maintain a relationship that was begun in LACE; and ends leaving us set up for what is an assumed obvious book three.

I'm not usually one for romance. But wrapped in the cloak of science fiction, I found this novella an enjoyable read; one that continued to issue societal, ethical, moral challenges that were begun Ms. Nestvold's series opener.

I rate this book 4 stars out of 5 on the following scale:
+ poor read
++ so-so read
+++ good read
++++ excellent read
+++++ life changing read

4.0 out of 5 stars I would read more from this author. March 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I found the book very engaging. I liked the characters and the world and society that the author created. This is my favorite kind of science fiction. The author creates of world similar to earth, but not the same, and shows something about our society by the contrast.

I didn't give it five stars because I save that rating for the one or two best books I've read that year. I'd like to see more from this author and plan to read her future books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather short December 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was more a short story than a novel or even a novella. I realize there was a first book and surely there will be more in the "series" but it would have been better to knit them together into a satisfying one book. The writing is fine and easy to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my new all time favorites! December 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read "Looking Through Lace" first and would recommend that in order to get the full flavor of the story. These two books have such an original storyline that it takes my breath away. I have read science fiction since the late 70's and dispaired of finding an author that could compare to my favorites...until now. I simply loved both books and will read anything Ruth Nestvold writes!

More About the Author

Since about the age six, Ruth Nestvold wanted to be a writer (besides wanting to be a singer and an actress and President of the United States), but for too many years she put practical pursuits first and writing fiction second. After completing a Ph.D. in literature and working as lecturer and assistant professor at the University of Stuttgart and the University of Freiburg, she took time off from academic pursuits to attend the Clarion West Writers Workshop, a six week "boot camp" for writers of science fiction and fantasy. She learned more there than she could have dreamed possible, changed her priorities, and gave up theory for imagination. Two years later, she sold her first short story to the acclaimed science fiction magazine, Asimov's. Since then, she has sold over forty pieces of short fiction to a variety of markets, including Baen's Universe, Strange Horizons, Scifiction, F&SF, Realms of Fantasy, and several year's best anthologies. She has been nominated for the Nebula, the Sturgeon, and the Tiptree awards. In 2007, the Italian translation of her novella "Looking Through Lace" won the "Premio Italia" for best international work. Her novel Yseult appeared in German translation as Flamme und Harfe with Random House Germany and has since been translated into Dutch and Italian. It is now available as an ebook in the original English. It was followed in June 2012 by the second book in the Pendragon Chronicles, "Shadow of Stone" (http://pendragonchronicles.wordpress.com). She taught creative writing for a semester at the University of Stuttgart, participates regularly in online writing workshops, and founded the Villa Diodati workshop for English-speaking writers of speculative fiction in Europe. She maintains a web site at www.ruthnestvold.com.
