Alexander Green is someone who knows how to make money. Although I do not know him personally, as a subscriber to numerous Agora publications I have made a good deal of profit on his recommendations, but I am by no means wealthy. Beyond Wealth is a self-explanatory title, since it focuses on the issues that arise in life once you step outside of yourself and realize that the rat race isn't all it's cracked up to be. This compilation of essays covers a wide territory from classical philosophy to current events and is written in a lucid and compelling manner. I agree that it would make an excellent graduation gift, or just a good book to have at hand if you have a few moments to spare. The author exhibits a wide and deep array of knowledge that is woefully absent in today's Talking Head Media and he demonstrates a true appreciation of what it means to be wealthy, both in terms of financial and spiritual aspects. This is a book that is worthy of your investment, both in time and money.

Beyond Wealth: A Treasure Trove of Thought,
By
This review is from: Beyond Wealth: The Road Map to a Rich Life (Hardcover)
I met Alexander Green a little over four years ago. As we got to know each other, we found we had similar interests: conversation, music, books, reading, and writing. He's a master at the latter, and I owe him a lot for mentoring me.
Alex's new book, "Beyond Wealth" can be read in the normal fashion, from front to back. But you can also pick it up, turn to any chapter, and just start reading. There's no question you will learn something... perhaps even something about yourself you didn't know. Best of all, it will cause you to think and wonder, and you'll be a better human being for it. I know I am. You see, I love being outside, in the woods... on a mountaintop... walking along a deserted beach... or on the water. Anywhere I can be alone... with my own thoughts. It's all very personal to me. Perhaps that's why I enjoy Alex's new book Beyond Wealth so much. After pouring over endless financial data and company reports every day, picking up Beyond Wealth, kicking back, and reading a chapter or two is just the ticket for me... just when I need it. There's a message in every chapter. Sometimes it's something we know we should be doing, but haven't been... or something we are doing, but shouldn't be. Or something about a subject we haven't given much thought to. He always has something interesting to say. The world, indeed the universe, holds many mysteries. Alex explores many of them, one at a time. With an incredibly articulate command of the English language... indeed, akin to Bill Bryson... Alex puts together a message in a few pages that always moves me in some way. Beyond Wealth causes me to pause... take a step back... think differently about myself... about others... my family... my kids... my friends... the universe... my belief system... what I value most in life... the list goes on and on. I can tell you with all sincerity you won't regret picking up a copy of Beyond Wealth. And you'll be all the richer for it. David Fessler

A fantastic gift for a new graduate!,

I'm buying several copies, because when it comes to upcoming graduation gifts and holiday gifts, this kind of book is always perfect. Inspiring, but not full of superficial platitudes. This book contains fascinating insights from both a historical perspective and modern experiences...about wealth, but not all about money. Very contemporary and accessible for the young adult; also sophisticated and at times humorous. Alex Green is a master at combining all these sensibilities. I also like it's bite-sized chapters, so you can learn something in just a short reading. Perfect for those who are busy or with low attention spans like me!

A surprisingly unique and fresh perspective on an age-old dilemma,
By
This review is from: Beyond Wealth: The Road Map to a Rich Life (Hardcover)
Having read many books on what truly matters in life and what success really means, I was pleasantly surprised by the insights Alex Green gives on this age-old problem; what is true success in life?
Throughout the book I kept thinking about how much I wish my children would incorporate many of these principles into their lives early on rather that becoming a bitter, regretful older adult because they followed the path that others defined as success for them. The biggest surprise for me, after reading Beyond Wealth, in addition to the fact that I kept thinking of my grow children and wishing they would read it now-was the realization that it was me who wished I had read it at 25! The good news is; it made me look differently at my current thoughts about what defines success in my life and the little things I can do different to enhance that journey from here on out. I too enjoyed the succinct chapters and I know that will help facilitate getting my children to read it! I have already ordered 3 copies for my children and I would highly suggest that you do the same for yourself and your children-before I's too late!

Great survey of human thought,

Just finished reading through this book. I've actually subscribed to Green's newsletter for many years. He's a GREAT financial thinker. But it was really nice to see his "other" side. I'm thinking this would be a great book for a grad, or for the beach - as the chapters feature self-contained essays on everything from the nature of friendship to what makes a great wine. Yes, money is important. But if you want to enjoy that money, this book can certainly help you do that - regardless of how much, or how little, you may have. I can definitely recommend this book.

Vegetable Soup for the Soul,

The majority of my waking hours involve reading vastly complicated financial material and data analysis. I am so busy in fact that the topics of deepest meaning I truly wish to understand receive just five to ten minutes of reading at the beginning of the day. This book sits on my bed-stand for tomorrow's short but meaningful grab and read session as I wake up with my morning green tea. I read it to remind myself of the surprising characteristics of what millionaires are really like; why you can't reach your potential of living life to the fullest if you spend your days swimming in concerns about money; how giving up the dream of "having it all" is often the first step in the right direction. Why spending time with nature will improve your cognition; the importance of cultivating meaningful, human relationships; how to bring the zeal of adventure back into your life; how to eat like a Zen Master; how the teachings of Buddha can make you a better investor; the fact that 80% of Americans are scientifically illiterate and how to easily correct this problem if you are one of them, and most importantly how to use negative visualization to deeply appreciate what you already have. Finally the book ends with a surprisingly excellent recipe for Alex's Mom's insanely great vegetable soup. I strongly recommend you put Alex Green's "Beyond Wealth" on your bed-stand!

This is one of the most thought challenging books I have read. I am giving copies of it to both of my adult children for themselves and their spouses to read. I am encouraging them to discuss some of the ideas in the book with their children, my grandchildren.

This review is from: Beyond Wealth: The Road Map to a Rich Life (Hardcover)
I found this book to be a wonderful read. It took a while to get through, not because it was difficult, but because there was so much food for thought. When I finished reading it, I began a second read, and know that it is a book I will come back to often in the future. I believe that I will make some changes in my life for the better as a result of thinking about ideas the book raised. I will also consult some of the excellent references that were listed in the back of this book. A great contribution that is bound to influence and change for the better the lives of those who read it. Jim Maguire
