Book Description

June 1997 Land of the Far Horizon (Book 4)
Is the handsome young naval officer her enemy or her destiny?

Leaving behind memories of a broken heart in her native America, Bailey Templeton embraces a challenging future when she arrives to teach the unruly children of Sydney Cove, Australia. Brought to the settlement by mistake, Bailey must battle to maintain a position intended for a man. Angered by the naval officer who stands in her way, the handsome Captain Grant Hogan, she throws herself into the challenging task of winning the hearts of the emancipist families.

Bailey's determination to make a difference in the lives of the children infuriates the controlling hierarchy of Sydney Cove. Harassed and threatened, Bailey soon finds her own life in danger, and her new friends, the Farrells and the Prentices, are imperiled by her very presence.

Must she leave behind the children? If she stays, will she survive the wrath of the corrupt junta? And will she ever be able to open her heart and love again?

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The fourth book in the "Land of the Far Horizon" series (e.g., The Emerald Flame, Bethany, 1996) finds independent woman Bailey Templeton traveling from England to New South Wales in 1807 to work as a teacher. However, she soon discovers that life in Sydney Cove will be more difficult than she had imagined. Fighting between those colonists who came to the country willingly and the emancipists sent there as criminal punishment has reached a fever pitch, even extending to the classroom setting. In addition, she finds herself falling in love with Capt. Robert Gabriel, who had hired her under the impression that she was a man. Since he resents her presence, their love affair is a rocky one. Christian themes take back stage to the plot in this work. Hickman brings the period to life well, and there is a solid chemistry between the main characters, making this a good purchase for those collections needing more historical romances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Wild Shores, May 3, 2000
This review is from: Beyond the Wild Shores (Land of the Far Horizon) (Book 4) (Paperback)
Beyond the Wild Shores catapults us back to a time when women not only had to work hard at the career of their choice but to work hard justifying having a career outside traditional roles. I love Baily Templeton, who is mistakenly hired as a Head Master of the rugged, Out-back colony of Sydney Cove. Her determination and love for teaching soon win the hearts of those she's seeking to reach as well as those that she is not seeking to reach--the handsome Captain Grant Hogan who is reluctantly but irrersistably drawn to her gentle gumption. Wonderfully inspirational. I loved it!
