Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6. This introduction compares the complexities of our five senses with machines and explains how they may or may not someday be able to perform the same functions. Hellman focuses on sensors that can respond to light, heat, motion, etc., and puts them in the context of everyday objects?toasters, burglar alarms, and auto-focus cameras. Discussions of how robots can be used in manufacturing, firefighting, and space exploration are included. The writing is clear and well organized and each chapter focuses on one of the senses and how machines are being developed to sense sight, taste, touch, etc. The black-and-white photos are informative, but not gripping.?Christine A. From Booklist

Gr. 7-9. From a four-legged robotic chimney cleaner to cochlear implants for the deaf, Hellman looks at what scientists and engineers are doing to create machines with humanlike senses. Each short chapter examines a specific sense, explaining how our bodies use it and how engineers are trying to replicate and, in some cases, surpass it. For example, the chapter on taste describes the mechanics of taste buds followed by the research into creating a "taste-bud-on-a-chip" that will be able to quickly test a substance's chemical composition and register the presence of any toxins. Although Hellman's writing is a little too technical for a general audience, this is a good browsing selection for science and science fiction readers--especially the final chapter, which imagines a world with "smart cars" and microscopic chips implanted in the body to monitor our health. Glossary, resources, bibliography, but no source notes. Randy Meyer
