Book Description

November 2003
Bhagavad-gita is a scripture universally accepted in Hindu spiritual traditions as the very essence of all holy scriptures; a revelation of God, which confers upon man the knowledge of correct action, consisting of recognition of God as the fundamental reality, and acting therefrom. In Master's transparent translation and commentary, the Gita reveals itself to the reader as the voice of now awakened sense of truth and rightness, rising from within his soul.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

We are extremely proud to be able to present you with the new translation and commentary of Bhagavad-gita, the most valued holy scripture of Hinduism, generally accepted as the cornerstone teaching of Vedanta and yoga. Although many translations exist, the manifold nature of the scripture, namely its intellectual, poetic and spiritual aspects, makes it understandable why neither translation is accepted by all as fully adequate. That is even more the case with the commentaries; while there are several acceptable translations, there are only two complete commentaries of all 18 chapters of Bhagavad-gita in English language (Hare Krishna version by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, and Self Realization Fellowship version by Paramahansa Yogananda), both of them highly controversial. This commentary is, therefore, the third book of its kind, and therefore of great historical value even now, in the moment of its publication.

This combination of transparent, accurate translation, and fresh, enlightened commentary casts a completely new light on the ancient scripture, blowing away the centuries old dust of misunderstandings and traditional misinterpretation, making the ancient text new, and extremely interesting to the modern reader. Illustrated by examples from computer science and physics, written fully from the author's vast spiritual experience, with extensive parallels drawn with the Gospel, this commentary will fascinate both common readers and scholars.

There is a category of books, whose high value is unanimously accepted--the holy scriptures of all major religions. Bhagavad-gita, together with its parent scripture, Mahabharata, most certainly has a special place in that category--and, furthermore, it is one of the first and oldest written documents known to man. In present situation, where most newly published books serve only to worsen the signal to noise ratio, this masterpiece is a breeze of fresh air, a return to the eternal values that transcend fashion. It is a book everybody should read, not out of passing interest, but in order to drink, again and again, the crystal clear water from the eternal well of Divine wisdom, to find undying inspiration and solid foundations to all aspects of life. If you got stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere, and had only this book with you, you would soon thank God for your good fortune.

I am the flavor of water, o son of Kunti. I am the light of the sun and the moon. I am the sound of Om in all the Vedas, the sound in the space, the manliness in men.

I am the pleasant scent of the earth, and the warmth of fire, I am the life in all beings, and the virtue of penance.

Know Me, o Partha, as the eternal seed of all beings. I am the wisdom of the wise, and the courage of the brave.

I am the power of the strong, free from desire and attachment. I am the yearning of all beings, which does not oppose dharma, o best of Bharatas.

(Bhagavad-gita 7:8–11)
