Beginning students of both Spanish and English will find use for Susan Hess' Bi-Lingual American Cooking. On parallel pages, Hess presents simple, common recipes for dishes representing North American, Mexican, and Italian traditions. These unexceptional recipes present few challenges, and many call for canned soups and other prepared ingredients. Hess even includes instructions for making instant mashed potatoes. Measurements reflect North American practices. But the main point of the book is not so much culinary as linguistic. Speakers of either language can learn a few basic principles of one another's language and have some fun in the kitchen at the same time. You will be very unhappy with this book. Here is an example of why: Recipe for "Mac and Cheese"
1 box macaroni and cheese. 1 stick butter 1/2 cup milk. Are you kidding me!!!
