Excellent. Long Overdue.

One late night during the summer of 2014, I turned on "SportsCenter" and found myself moments later wondering: "Why are plays featuring the seventh round draft pick of the St. Louis Rams in his first pre-season game leading off the broadcast and being analyzed by football experts?" Because they were the plays of Michael Sam, the first openly gay man trying to make an NFL team. Had ESPN become ESPCN? This excellent book by Dylan Gwinn contains a 26 page chapter on the Michael Sam saga including the following:

"But what's brave or heroic about saying you're gay in America in 2014? Not much. ... All it means is that Sports Center is going to be showing your highlights all day ... But the only reason we're asked to know or care about Jason Collins or Michael Sam is because they're gay, and that's a problem." (P.87)

The book also contains a 17 page chapter on the atrocious treatment Tim Tebow received from the sports media. With all the news about pro football players involving guns, strip clubs, domestic abuse, alcohol abuse, drugs, and steroids, how sad the despicable treatment Tebow received. Mr. Gwinn gets to the heart of the double standard:

"And if you didn't like Tebow's stance on abortion, fine; ignore it the same way I ignore the seven children, as of this writing, that Adrian Peterson has fathered out of wedlock when I cheer his brilliance on the football field. Ignore Tebow's tebowing the same way Eagles fans ignored Michael Vick's dog-torturing and mutilation when they cheered for him." (P.113)

Liberal bias in the news media has been apparent for decades. But it has taken longer, at least for this reader, to recognize that the sports media largely is just as liberal and politically correct.Read more ›

Brace yourselves, the truth hurts and this book is filled with truth from cover to cover. No matter on which side of the political fence you fall, this book will certainly bring about great commentary if only in your own mind. It raises the question of athletes' and commentators' place in the ever polarizing world of political correctness. It will definitely bolster your opinion, regardless of what your opinion may be. A very interesting take on what we all enjoy; sports, with the ever present tounge-in-cheek humor of The Mighty Gwinn.

If you call yourself a sports fan or you watch any kind of sports on TV you've gotta get this book! Dylan knows what he is talking about and I cannot recommend this enough. It's the best thing I've read this year! I only gave it 5 stars because giving it more than that wasn't an option. BUY THIS NOW!

Wow! Excellent Read!!!

I've always felt like the mainstream media leaned left but I had no idea the same rule applies to sports media as well. This book was a real eye opener to the point where I don't think I'll ever be able to watch ESPN the same way again. I would recommend this book to anyone who truly loves sports and actually cares about the integrity of the game. And that goes for both Liberals AND Conservatives.

Sports Used to Be Fun

It used to be about the games. But, sadly, it hasn't been for a long time and this book tells you why: the same philosophy that motivates the mainstream news media motivates the mainstream sports media: ESPN, CBS, and Sports Illustrated. The motivation to "report" on sports is no longer to tell us what happened, it's to tell us how we should think and what we should believe. This book opens the door to why we see what see in today's sports media. It tells us, clearly and concisely, why the "games" are only a pretext to advance the cause of the American left. This book gave me the reasons why I no longer subscribe to SI (just dropped after subscribing since 1974), no longer subscribe to ESPN The Magazine/Insider, no longer listen to sports talk radio, and no longer visit the ESPN website. Liberalism ruins everything it touches and it has ruined sports. This book tells you why it's no longer about the games. Highly recommended.

Thought-Provoking, Clear Explanation of a Cultural Shift in Sports Media

Bias in the booth shows how the world of news media has become intertwined with the sports media with very negative consequences. Gwinn contends that in our fast-paced world, the worldview of much of the news media (the left-leaning view exposed in various books and studies) has infiltrated the sports world, especially through ESPN and the world of blogging.

Gwinn's strongest arguments in the book relate to bias against evangelical Christians. The best chapters, in my opinion, are the early chapters which discuss at length Tim Tebow, contrasting him with Michael Sam. Gwinn makes a strong argument that these two were treated very differently by the sports media for purely political purposes.

The book is an easy read. Gwinn writes in a lively, engaging style. This is less a peer-reviewed, scholarly study and more the observations of an insider who has worked in sports media for years. Gwinn's observations largely ring true to me. Gwinn makes a strong case that freedom of expression which runs counter to the left-leaning media is a dangerous thing for those who dare to speak with the courage of their convictions.
