Certainly not just an "immature" early stage of the Requiem,
By Baroque and opera freak "Barry" (Hong Kong) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Biber: Requiem a 15; Steffani: Stabat Mater (Audio CD)
It is obvious from the number of recordings of this work that it is considered to be one of Biber's greatest works, and a very significant work of the Baroque period. Listening to this recording, it is obvious that this is not just an early stage of the Requiem that had to wait for Mozart, Verdi and others to reach its maturity, as a well-educated reviewer claims on Amazon.uk. No, this is already a work of great profundity and tremendous artistic unity. I have only heard this recording by Leonhardt and the one by Jordi Savall, and this is the one that has moved me the most -- on first hearing, I must say, whereas I listened to Savall's recording several times. But both are undoubtedly very fine recordings. The important thing is that this second-to-none Leonhardt recording, which is out of print and very hard to get, has now been re-released as part of the Deutsche Harmonia Mundi 50th Anniversary Edition -- 50 incredible CDs in a boxed set for an unbelievable price -- so there is now no need for any lover of Baroque music and sacred music to be without this superb recording any more. But beware -- this 50-CD set may also quickly become a collector's item that you just can't get ahold of, at least not for a reasonable price. Don't let it pass you by! You will cherish every disk.

This review is from: Biber: Requiem a 15; Steffani: Stabat Mater (Audio CD)
For me it was the Stabat Mater of Steffani that made me deside to buy this disc.
De Nederlandse Bach Verening,( translates to 'The Dutch Bach Society') is wellknown and pulls full venues. The Stabat Mater is something special in Baroque as well as modern classics... The Mourning of the Mother over the lost child.. How deep can it be expressed ? To me it often brings the tears up when hearing a well-performed Stabat Mater. Pergolesi remains my favorit,(to name them.. with Ann Kirkeby, with Aafje Heynis and with Cathleen Ferrier in lead-voice, wowow!!!!!) but lately, while driving, heard this Stabat Mater of Steffani live on radio for the first time in my life and it grabbed me.. That was a recording in smaller instrumentation and live performed.. A moving voice, a mournig cello etc.. No recording on CD, so it has allready drifted away like that happens to so many incredibly deepmoving music after performance.. That is why going to concerts is so very-very well spending of our lifetime. Precious. On search, I found only few recordings of the Steffani Stabat Mater.. So chose this one and do like it. But miss the depth of the closer feel from that radio-recording. This CD though is one of few and it has the live-thing, one can imagine to be there with the listeners in an old church-building. That is the interesting part. Music meant for Church, heard in that acoustic setting. But, as said, I will remain searching for a more close recording, it can be done deeper. Bought this CD secondhand at Amazon, by the way, and it came-in from America, so it went back home to Holland, sort of ?..
