A Great Commentary, February 21, 2011
This review is from: The One Volume Bible Commentary (Hardcover)
I believe this is the best one volume commentary out there. Matthew Henry and Adam Clarkes abrigded commentaries are great but they are just that, abridged. If you want a great overview of the Bible verse by verse this is it. One of my favorite parts about this volume are the essays in the front of the book. Although they are not exhaustive they give great overviews on many Bible topics and enough to understand the general idea each is conveying.
The volume is compiled by 40 different Biblical scholars and is representative of many religious views, from what I have seen. If you are just a casual reader of the Bible wanting to get basic explanations this is a great starting point. If you are wanting to get an indepth and exhaustive commentary this is not it. It has just the right mix.
Although I did not agree with everything that was said in the book I still think it is an excellent read and I took many many notes from it. Pick it up and enjoy it.
