a must read, October 9, 2004
This review is from: Bible Enlightened: Religion and Yoga - Vol. 1 (Paperback)
The meaning of the word's religion and yoga are surprising similar, religion is from the Latin, re - ligare, ligare meaning to connect in the sense of tying up (the English word ligature comes from this source). Yoga means union in the sense of connecting together, (the English word yoke, coming from this root).
Dan Costian has written a brilliant work in which he looks how Eastern and Western views of religion complement rather than compete with each other.
The book is structured in two volumes, the first one dealing mostly with the Old Testament, while the second volume is devoted mainly to the Divine Son and the Divine Mother.
The author analyzes the Bible (Old and New Testaments) and compares it to scriptures from Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism and other religions, as well as esoteric doctrines such as Kabbalah, Sufism, Hesychasm with a view to discovering their deep, hidden essences.
The author uses his scietnific background to bring together knowledge from science (mathematics, physics, astronomy, anatomy and physiology and other scientific resources), as well as historical facts, geographical surveys, results of archaeological findings, mythology, art history, analysis of folklore and ancient traditions, comparative linguistics especially of ancient languages.
A hugely impressive work.

Inner light on the Bible, April 27, 2004

This review is from: Bible Enlightened: Religion and Yoga - Vol. 1 (Paperback)
If the wealth of references looks at first glance somehow too heteroclite, you keep being impressed by the knowledge and steady investigation of the author. Whether you share or not the general perspective, his journey through biblical symbolism and historical hypotheses will not only become a lasting inspiration, but also an opportunity to rediscover the Jewish and Christian sacred texts with a wider spiritual approach.

This review is from: Bible Enlightened: Religion and Yoga - Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Besides thoroughly analyzing the Bible (Old and New Testaments) in connection to other Scriptures pertaining to Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism and other religions, as well as esoteric doctrines such as Kabbalah, Sufism, Hesychasm aiming at discovering their deep, hidden essence, the author resorted to a wealth of documentary sources. However, beyond the inherent historical approaches, the work, is focused upon phenomenology with the aim of highlighting the common ground shared by the great religions and yoga spirituality.
