I will leave discussions about the "tool of death" to the hardware department and discuss the merits of this Bible. My wife and I knew that her mother wanted a Bible that included the NIV translation, Thompson Chain Reference, and was large enough for her to read without squinting. I was pleased to find exactly such a Bible here. My father-in-law examined her copy and let us know that he wanted one for Fathers Day. My only wish is that a choice of colored leather binding was available. I have a normal size print edition of this Bible and have found it helpful in preparing Bible studies and sermons. While not as in depth as the Oxford NRSV or Zodhiates Word Study Bible the NIV Thompson Chain Reference system is handy for finding related concepts and taking a quick survey of a topic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Bible for those needing larger print!, January 16, 2007
By
L. Fricker (Slough, Berkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I received this Bible a month ago, I live in the UK and as usual the service from the US was first class! If you have a problem seeing regular sized print then this is the Bible for you. The print is really large and dark, and even the red words of Christ are not too glary. The bonded leather edition - which I own - is a good quality binding, useful thumb index, useful helps in the back, as well as excellent quality maps. For those wanting to dig deeply, it also has cross references listed at the end of the verse. The Bible is built to last and I am delighted with it. If you are on a budget and cannot afford the bonded leather, then I can also recommend the imitation leather, which I bought for my huband. The only difference is that the edges are stained a gold colour, not gold leaf, and the binding is a slightly thinner imitation leather, - however if you keep yours in a soft case you will hardly notice the difference. It would be really great if Zondervan could do this in a nice calf skin as it really is a great edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars People with great eye sight still need a copy like this, March 13, 2008
By
I have great eye sight, I don't even wear glasses, and I still love this copy of the bible. Once I was reading during a Good Friday service, and as the service went on, they lowered the lights, by the time I was to read I couldn't see the print from the bible I had brought. The next day I bought a copy of this bible (bonded leather edition) and I use it more then all my others. It's great for not losing your place if you're reading in public or studying. It's easier to find your place again if you look up or away for a moment. And, it just looks and feels like you're holding a bible. I recommend this extra-large print bible for anyone who reads in public.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Readable Text., April 14, 2010
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this Bible and had it sent directly to ACE BookBinding Co. in Ok. City. ACE rebound it in a beautiful black cowhide. This was an Easter gift for my pastor. This Bible is not awkwardly large and yet it has a great text size and layout for reading, even from a pulpit. I also purchased one for a dear woman in our church and had ACE rebind it in a beautiful marbeled brown cowhide.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bible excellent - design and production less so, October 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
.
This review has to include several factors.
You may not care about all of them so adjust the rating according to your preference.
.
It is the NIV version.
If you are a King James Only (KJO) person then you won't like it.
If you want the apocrypha and many other books then you may need to find an Eastern Orthodox or Ethiopian version somewhere. Or buy them separately.

If you just want the most accurate and usable translation of the accepted Canon then this one is excellent.

Google for more details on NIV but in short:
Usable - middle of the road approach
-not word for word losing meaning of idioms. And
- Not pure thought for thought totally changing the original word sequences either, nor dumbed down for people with difficulty reading above 2nd grade level.

Composite of all available original ancient mss sources (which do have some conflicts due to copying errors or intentional additions by other writers) which were analysed by a large team of experts to decide what was most likely in the original text and what did it really mean back then.
.
Production quality less pleasing in some areas.
.
Paper cover unlikely to hold up with lots of use. Slick feel is not pleasant to me.

I prefer the tougher, textured cover
(fake leather?) on my small print version.
.
Large Print! Claims that it is 14 point. Maybe but Looks like it might be 13 point with extra ledding. Very readable though.

Much easier to read EXCEPT that the paper is so thin the ink on the other side comes through which undoes the advantage of large type.
.
I would much rather have a thicker book or even two volumes so the paper could be opaque and avoid that problem.
.
This is a reference Bible.
It has a table of metrics used back then.
Brief introduction.
Small dictionary/concordance.
And a few maps.

Red letter edition.
Does have footnotes on each page to help with some meanings. No pointer to what map to see.

Better than nothing, I guess.
You may love it though.
.
If I had seen this in the bookstore I would not have gotten it.

Unfortunately zondervan does not manufacture a Bible with the options that *I* want.

Ideally I would like a large print, opaque paper, textured cover, red letter, chronological arrangement, on page study notes, and on page reference, edition.
.
The layout is awkward.
I want the reference info right next to the verse(s) they apply to.

Having to hunt down the associated info from the back of the book interrupts reading and comprehension. A few short notes are on the page bottom.
.
I would suggest that you buy a vanilla style printing that you like along with separate , bigger, easier to use references like maps, dictionary, etc.
.
Our local computer store sells DVDs and CDs that are chock full of various references that are easy to pull up on screen.

I hate to read on screen, but using a pc to quickly show the reference info is easier and not as distracting as looking through the same volume for reference data in the back when it should be right next to the verses. Then I can look back and forth quickly several times without flipping pages.

They can't even bother to put a pointer to the right page for reference info next to the verse.
You have to hunt it down.

That would make it too easy and useful, I guess.
.
If you just want large print this one qualifies.

If you want easy to use reference then it will leave you cold.
If you want easy to read it will be annoying with the ink bleeding through from the opposite page.
If you want affordable, this qualified at amazon!
The list price of $28 seems a bit much though.

If you want the best translation, NIV is it.
.
You make your choice and pays your money.
.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect., May 6, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This edition would be "perfect" if the references were "center column" instead at the end of the verse. End-of-verse references are just the bare minimum. Though the NIV is a good translation, the lack of sufficient references in this edition make it less than perfect for a study Bible. The type is great though....VERY easy to read.
