This guide is aimed at anyone who's ever wanted to get to grips with the content, meaning and relevance of the books of the Bible. For each book there is a summary of what, in essence, the book is all about and how it fits into the overall themes. The main events and characters are set out, along with the well-known stories. Then the book is unpacked with a commentary (narrative books); and (for non-narrative books) the main significance and cultural backdrop are explored. Colour photographs and charts help get across the key points without over-complicating the issues.

In The Bible Guide, Knowles (Chelmsfort Cathedral and St. John's Coll., Nottingham) provides insight, time lines, chapter outlines, and context to create what he calls a simple companion guide to the Bible. Generously illustrated and written in straightforward prose, it will appeal to Bible readers seeking more direction for study. Knowles stays close to the text, often offering an idea-by-idea running commentary that tends toward description rather than historical/critical analysis. His use of Christocentric dating conventions and the Old Testament rather than the Hebrew Bible marks this as a popular work. Many general survey books are available John Bowker's The Complete Bible Handbook, for instance, does essentially the same thing but is even glossier and more heavily illustrated but Knowles's is an acceptable choice for libraries that do not yet own a one-volume Bible handbook or whose current handbooks lack visual images.

Keep an Open Mind,

Great content, visuals and very easy to read. Very good resource for new Christians keeping in mind that this is a summary from one perspective. You may not agree with all conclusions, such as Adam and Eve not being the first humans, but the author does not shove his view down your throat. All claims should be verified or dismissed using your own Bible version. Great Study tool.

The Bible Guide is the most informative book I've experienced to date. It's well laid out, very easy to read while being extremely enjoyable. This is the only book worth buying in my opinion and believe me, I've seen plenty of Bible guides and none of them even come close to this book. You'll need only two books in your possession - The Bible and its counterpart, The Bible Guide.
