About the Author

Growing up, Rick Osborne really liked Superman. Superman did what was right, he did cool things that other people couldn’t do, and he never quit. The Bible is full of great Superman-type stories where God helps good guys battle evil guys with his awesome supernatural help. By telling these stories, Rick loves to help boys see the real-life superhero that God wants each of them to be. Rick lives with his family up north in Canada, closer to where Superman built his fortress.

Marnie Wooding has written over a dozen books and is pleased to be a Zonderkidz author. She is a screenwriter and story editor for both film and television, and is currently a founding partner in a motion picture development company. She lives with her family in the beautiful coastal foothills of Vancouver, Canada.

Ed Strauss lives in British Columbia, Canada, with his wife and three tween-aged children. Ed is a freelance writer with a passion for Biblical apologetics and fantasy fiction. Apart from writing, Ed enjoys biking and exploring nature.

Jack Snider survived his youth despite growing up in a tiny house with five brothers. Inspired by comics, cartoons, and plain old boredom, he developed an obsession with drawing that he has never outgrown. After graduating from Kendall College of Art and Design, he worked for ten years designing cartoon art for kid’s clothes. He currently earns his living as a freelance illustrator and lives with his wife, son, and a ridiculous number of pets in Michigan.

Despite a few mistakes as the previous reviewer mentioned, this book is absolutely amazing. My nine-year-old son has turned this book into a well-read, crinkled, well-loved book that he constantly reads and re-reads. Because of the addition of the verses inside, he's also turned to his Bible to continue reading more about each Hero or Bad Guy and to see what God has to say about these people. The language the authors use has enabled my son to relate to the book, to understand it, and to enjoy reading. I would recommend this to anyone (and already have!) who have boys (or even girls) who want a "cool" read while learning just how exciting the Bible really is!

Part of the 2:52 collection (based on Luke 2:52), Bible Heroes & Bad Guys offers portraits of 31 characters from the Bible. Old and New Testament "guys" (though the book does feature both men and women of Scripture) receive the full treatment: the good, the bad, the ugly. Each section starts with a bulleted list of character highlights then progresses to a more detailed retelling of that person's story. The "Getting Deeper" section of each chapter offers practical applications for readers, including action steps kids can take to live the lessons learned from that person's life. Finally, a "Bible Supercharge" section provides a verse perfect of memorization.

The chapters are short, just four pages each. Readers will find illustrations, large and small, peppered throughout the text, usually every two to three pages.

The illustrations feature unique perspectives, lots of action and heavy outlines, a style typical of comic books. Except for the cover, all are black and white.

WHAT I LIKE: The series has tremendous appeal for boys! I gave this book to my nephew for his 8th birthday. Within a week he begged his mom to buy him the rest of the books in the series. He loves them! I like that this book is based on solid biblical teaching. References are frequently provided. The format and text makes the Bible interesting to young kids and reminds them of the adventures hidden within Scripture's pages.

WHAT I DISLIKE: The book has a very trendy voice, as if one young kid is talking to another. This makes it more appealing to kids, but can be awkward for parents to read aloud.

OVERALL RATING: Excellent.

My reluctant reader has this about memorized!! We're buying another from the series soon. Not the greatest in parent's opinion but currently son is saving it for "his own son"!!

Apparently this book was not proofread before going to press. I have found many mistakes and typos. One example, is on page 21 under "Bible Supercharge": the Bible reference is "Proverbs 37:3". When I wrote to the publisher about it and other mistakes, I received no response.
Another rather annoying aspect is the language used. I realize that the authors are trying to be "hip" so as to communicate on a child's level, but I found I had to stop continuously and explain to my son "what that means". We just don't talk that way, and my kids have never heard of many of the phrases used.
This book started with a good idea, but it could have been so much better. The most disappointing aspect was the apparent sloppiness and uncaring attitude of the publisher.
