This is the Best English Translation of the Bible,
By Mark Wilkins (Tampa, Florida United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Holy Bible in Modern English (Leather Bound)
This particular translation was painstakingly created beteen 1853, and 1903. This is an actual translation by the dedicated, and it gives you exactly what is in the Bible. There are also some very good footnotes, and forwards, for the places that are hard to translate. Once you try this Bible you will not want any other. Read the Book of Jonah and you will see that his being swallowed by a whale is a mistranslation, you will have to read it to see what really happened.

Unfortunately, the Ferrar Fenton translation is not easy to find but it is one of the very best translations available. This one is a good price. Get it in whatever form you can. It is based on the Septuagint, NOT the Masoretic text, which also makes it far, far superior.

"By Periods God created that which produced the Solar Sysems;" Genesis 1:1
Wow! This is a wonderful new, modern sense of the Bible. Ferrar Fenton's translation is better than I had hoped it would be. The book arrived in great time and it is beautifully bound.

A friend of mine has this version and I always enjoyed its different translation, which is very down to earth. Finally I decided to grab a copy myself. I've yet to find any translations that seemed to be only an opinion of the author, and the version only seems to just make and verse make more sense in how the word is spoken now, verses the origional languages. Even though it was translated years ago, the author makes this version much easier to read and understand, I use mine mostly in a weekly bible study compared with a few other versions to help make sense or get different points of view when we want clarity.

Received a copy as a gift, and was surprised at the clarity of the translation, at the different way Fenton looks at certain passages. There are some "Britishisms" which will make the American smile (or scratch their head) now and then, but not that many. British spelling, of course.
It's such a different approach that frequently his way of putting it will cause us to say, "Wow, I've never considered that, but it makes sense, I can see why he might translate it that way!" Whether you read casually, or study deeply, you'll probably like this version. If you have a friend who is a scholar, this will be a gift that he/she will really appreciate. I don't care for his re-ordering the numbering of the verses in some chapters, and the order of the books. That's confusing, but that's all part of its charm, I suppose.

Book quality excellent,
By Miss Kagefree (Dallas, Tx, USA) - See all my reviews

Besides the translation being brilliant, I was surprised at the book-quality.
The pages are bright white, thick, between the quality of laser paper and of magazines. Even though I also purchased a good lighted magnifier, the print is quiet bold and readable. The book is sturdy, weighty, and almost 3" thick. Very different from what I had until now, with the slippery soft covers and ricepaper/like pages... I love it.

Fenton was a British merchant who read his Greek New Testament with the same familiarity he had with English. His translation is so refreshing, brings so many new concepts to light for the reader, and sometimes evokes a laugh where a British expression gives away his own culture. He was a lay-Catholic, and occasional Catholic doctrine is reflected in the translation (which is why I only give it four stars). I find this to be a great companion in comparitive studies.
His footnotes and dating is very informative. The confusing thing is that he arranges the books in the order he believes they were written, rather than the traditional way, so you will use the table of contents to find many books.

Very good translation, but...,

The binding was unglued when I received it and the print on alot of the pages was faded...from 1 to 5 on fading I would say some pages were at a 3 as far as darkness of font. I love the translation..but am not happy with the product I received. Mom and Pop organization that prints it off. Nothing wrong with that...but as I mentioned earlier you can tell it is not done professionally.
