This Bible offers a long-awaited perspective on the interconnectedness of love for the Earth with which we have been entrusted and love for our neighbor. With a foreword by Desmond Tutu and essays by various Biblical scholars, this Bible is an asset to anyone's library. I am currently borrowing a copy to use for planning a four-week VBS centered on care for creation and love of neighbor, and the Green Bible has very much helped in shaping my curriculum.
Contrary to popular theology, care for creation and love of God are NOT mutually exclusive; they are intertwined. What God has called good, let no one call profane (Acts 10:15). The Bible has long been used by those who believe that we can use and abuse the Earth for our own devices, no matter the cost - all based on interpretations in translation (i.e., that humans are to "subdue" the earth). The Green Bible highlights the passages that decry such selfish, Godless interpretations of scripture and helps us to understand that those who would wreak havoc on the earth for their own devices do not have a monopoly on the interpretation of God's word.
Jesus declares that we are to love all our neighbors; and, as J. Matthew Sleeth writes in his essay at the beginning of the Green Bible, our neighbors include all those who also must live in this world - even those who have yet to be born.

Romans 1:22-25, November 8, 2010

The Bible says it much better than I can (ESV):
22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
The perversity of an Environmentalist's Bible is beyond the pale. Conservationism and good stewardship is Biblical and sensible. Environmentalism is a religion that doesn't put God at the center but the planet we live on for such a short time. It is incompatible with Christianity.

The notes in this Bible take the focus off of the whole purpose of the Bible and shift it to a non-christian, non-judeo world view. It promotes nature worship instead of the true and original intention of the Bible, God worship. This Bible claims that, "creation care is at the very core of our Christian walk" (intro. 1-20). God does teach us in the Bible to take care of the earth, but he doesn't tell us to make it our priority or to worship creation by putting it above all else. Our priority according to the Bible should be "The LORD our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart," Deuteronomy 6:4-6. This Bible, in the intro, claims that the biggest problem in the world is that the world [physical earth]is dying. The Bible itself clearly states that the biggest problem in the world is that souls are perishing because of SIN. (John 3:16, Romans 3:23, 6:23) God is going to make a new heavens and new earth one day (Isaiah 65:17, Isaiah 66:22, 2 Peter 3:13), so even though we DO NEED TO take care of our earth, it is not eternal in its current state. Our SOULS however are ETERNAL and we have to make the choice whether our souls will live eternally in heaven or lie in hell forever. That is a much bigger problem than saving a physical earth that will someday be recreated in perfection. Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." The eternal death of the souls of all of earth's inhabitants is a much bigger issue than the death of a planet which will be reborn. In Luke 12:33-35 and Matthew 6:20-22 Jesus talks about focusing on eternal things, not earthly things that will one day fade away. Let's keep our priorities straight and really save the world by helping people see their need to save their souls, through faith in Jesus Christ as the one and only God and Savior!
Isaiah 65:17 says, "For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind."
