Book Description

Law, Politics, and Society February 2005
John Blakeman's The Bible in the Park is an in-depth study of federal district court policymaking and litigation trends in First Amendment cases concerning religious speech and expression in public places. District courts play an important policymaking role in the federal judicial system, and Blakeman's book contributes to our understanding of that role, especially in the context of religious liberty and free speech disputes. As the courts of first instance in the federal judicial system, district courts are charged with interpreting and applying First Amendment law at the trial level.

This review is from: The Bible In The Park (Law, Politics, and Society) (Hardcover)
I bought this shortly after it came out and was just looking at it. Since no one else reviewed it, I will offer a few quick words. It is a fairly interesting discussion of a specialized subject matter -- federal district court rulings on religious expression in public places. The matter continues to be relevant with a few important cases being decided after the book was published, including involving a cross in the middle of the desert that provided Justice Sotomayor a chance to offer a window into her own thinking on the subject. I rank it "decent" and give it three stars because it didn't really take things to the next level for me, and at times was not very interesting. I say this as someone fairly interested in the subject, if not in a professional fashion. I was a bit disappointed with it but still it is a good book & worth a read (though it might be a bit out of date in some ways) particularly for those who want to see how federal district court judges act.
