Book Description

Bison Book February 1, 1971
"'The Story of Frontier Religion' could have been told in a great many ways, many of them dull. Here, however, interpretative matter has been kept to a minimum and source material selected with an unerring sense of humor. . . . There are chapters on the styles of preaching and of praying, the phenomena of revivalism, the church as a disciplinary force, frauds and 'bad men' who preached, scoffers and trouble-makers, the fiercely jocular competition among the various sects, and the hard lot of circuit ministers."--Virginia Kirkus' Bulletin. "This is an admirable piece of research, unpedantic but authentic, packed with entertaining anecdotes (some of them hilarious) based on obscure pastoral autobiographies, the diaries of early missionaries, the minutes of church court trials, and other curious source materials. . . . A unique book."--Chicago Sunday Tribune. Ross Phares has written widely for magazines and is the author of several books.

A professor read short excerpts from this book to us to illustrate the life of a frontier preacher. We bought a copy to read all of the stories.
Preachers are often portrayed as pushovers and wimpy. This book recounts stories from the west that prove preachers can preach to save your soul and shoot to save your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical Book a Great Read!, March 4, 2010

This review is from: Bible in Pocket, Gun in Hand: The Story of Frontier Religion (Bison Book) (Paperback)
"Bible in Pocket, Gun in Hand; The Story of Frontier Religion" is a unique book that is both historical and a delightful reading experience. Based on journal accounts of early preachers of all denominations and other primary sources, the book recounts what it was really like on the frontier. Many humorous incidents, historical reviews of frontier society (camp meetings, etc.), and one of the most detailed accounts of "circuit riding preachers" of both Baptist and Methodist persuasion. Well documented, and a brief 166 pages, you won't be able to put it down!

Enid District, Oklahoma Conference
The United Methodist Church
