Interesting, but not for kids,
By A Customer
This review is from: Bible Stories Coloring Book (Dover Classic Stories Coloring Book) (Paperback)
This book is for adults who would like to see Middle Age art. The pictures remind me of stain glass pictures I saw in European Cathedrals, but have even more fine details. You would need a magnifying glass, skill, and an fantastic amount of time to color the book. Moses has horns, women are topless, the ancient text in pictures is not legible by children. The last picture includes a scene from an apocryphal book (Bel and the Dragon). I rate it low because it is not advertised clearly and thus may pull in those looking for a children's Sunday School book.

Don't let the fact that it's a 'coloring book' fool you,

This coloring book is not for children. This is why I rated it so low. This is basically a set of stories from the Bible and coloring pages from a Bible printed in 1479 in Germany. It would take a very patient adult to give credit to the page by coloring it. If you are looking for Bible Stories with illustrations for adults then this is a fine book. If you are looking for Bible stories that you can read to children and you, the adult are going to color the page, this is fine as well. But it really doesn't work well for children.

Strange for a coloring book,
This review is from: Bible Stories Coloring Book (Dover Classic Stories Coloring Book) (Paperback)
I didn't see any topless women in it like another reviewer mentioned and I looked rather closely at each image, but Moses definitely appears to have horns. This IS a weird biblical coloring book though, that's for sure! The images only take up about 1/3 of each page, the rest is filled with the story that accompanies each illustration.Odd, but then again, the coloring book itself was originally published in 1973 when graphical and printing capabilities were rather limited compared to what they are today. The illustrations are 15th century repros and intricately detailed. It was nice to add to my collection but I don't think I'll be revisiting it often. |
