5.0 out of 5 stars Reference Check, January 24, 2001
I was reading the reviews of this Bible and found two which troubled me. You see, I believe that this is an excellent study Bible, I own one and am contemplating the purchase of another. The study aids and references are easily found and easy to read. It increased my understanding of God's word quite a lot. In fact my 12 year old sister likes this Bible because she understands the language better than in a KJV, however the changing of a few words seems to offend some of the readers of this Bible. In later reviews they refer to the changing of the word black in Song of Solomon 1:5 to dark. This is a perfectly acceptable translation of the word when one considers the translation from Hebrew to english can be dusky which is dark while not necessarily black. And in the second complaint from Song of Solomon 5:11 which is about being bushy headed. The original Hebrew word is translated as vibrating and pendulous meaning wavy and long. I see no problem with either translation. Please check your references before you slam an excellent and helpful translation of God's word. (I checked mine in the Strong's Concordance. It translates from the original Hebrew and Greek which our Bible was written in.)

5.0 out of 5 stars NKJV contains rich, poetic language; and, source notes., August 24, 1998
By A Customer
New King James Version (NKJV): This version, like the NASB, contains richer language. One advantage of the NKJV is the use of textual notes that compare the variations between the source manuscripts. I have not seen such extensive notes in other "regular" versions of the Bible. (Some specific "study" Bibles have extensive notes; but, for some readers, those notes are so extensive as to be distracting.) Another advantage of the NKJV is that its language seems to have been polished with the liturgical reader in mind. Much of it seems to roll off the tongue, especially in the Psalms. For that reason, the NKJV has been adopted as the "official" English translation by the Orthodox Church in America (OCA). They are the "missionaries to America" in terms of Orthodox Christianity; and, were pioneers in reaching outside of the traditional ethnic enclaves. When the OCA decided to prepare its own "study Bible", it employed the NKJV, rather than come up with its own translation. For this reason, I recommend the NKJV to members of Orthodox home-prayer groups. (Of course, it is equally useful for members of other denominations.)

5.0 out of 5 stars My commentary for The Open Bible Completely Revised, December 5, 2003

carlene goodwin (Long Beach, CA (USA)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Open Bible (New King James Version) Completely Revised And Now Featuring 4,500 New Study Notes (Hardcover)
I have found this Bible study the most exelerating and refreshing
enrichment since I have been studying the Bible. Everything you want to know is there! and more. I normally buy a discouse by a historian scholar but this kept my interest. This Bible is for The advanced Bible Student ready for more of the same.

This review is based on many years of study including The Thompson's Chain Bible, F. F. Bruce's Commentaries, Merrill Tenney Books, John Montgomery's Books, Also Charles Spurgeon's Commentaries, C.S. Lewis's books and Josh McDowell's Evidense Books and new one A Ready Defense. These are just a few of the main Studies I have researched.
