If I can read it, it can't be too hard,

Let me preface this by saying that while my reading comprehension level in English is in the top 5% in the US, my Spanish is frequently lacking in conversations with 5 year olds.
According to other reviewers, this version is supposed to be comparable to the English version the "New American Standard". It seems to stay close to the original languages as does the NAS. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that other than using vosotros and all the verb conjugations that go with it, the vocabulary in LBLA is in common enough usage that I rarely have to consult a dictionary. (Mind you, I have to use a dictionary all the time just to read casual emails from friends in Mexico and Honduras). The NAS vocabulary seems to be at a more advanced level (collegiate) and I found myself consulting an English dictionary on more than one occasion. I have no worries about my Spanish speaking friends' ability to read the LBLA even if they are merely average readers. The type is easy to read and the verse numbers are all on the left-hand side and easy to locate. The main drawbacks are the lack of a concordance, internal cross-referencing and footnotes. Also, it is a paperback, and doesn't feel like it will handle much abuse. |
