The most valuable aspect of this book, for me, was the research revealing the historical transformation of Anat, whose name may be the origin of the word "anatomy", into Yahweh the God of Israel. To paraphrase the story, Anat was the supreme mother goddess of very ancient or pre-Hebrew tribes; her two feminine aspects Anat (fertility) and Yah (growth) each gained disciples and eventually the two groups split into opposing denominations. The Yah group found much in common with the god-worshippers of surrounding peoples, so much so that Yah's followers began to think of her as masculine, then as male, at which point Yah became Yahweh the God of Israel. The main focus of this book is an arcane biblical code which I found rather vague and unlikely to have much scholarly merit. But the etymology of the biblical names (alphabetically listed) enhanced my understanding of biblical stories, and was something like reading a baby name book. If you like codes, this is the book for you; if you prefer the goddess history, a more thorough treatment may be found in Raphael Patai's "The Hebrew Goddess".
