5.0 out of 5 stars Biblical Demonology
Very academic. Written by a well educated man of god. Scripturally accurate. Excellent exposition on the doctrine of demonolgy. If you are of the charasmatic bent or want to rid demons from your city, you will be disappointed. If you are seeking truth in regard to this doctrine, get it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book so far ...
I have only browsed through the book so far, but it seems to be interesting comment about the subject. I ordered three books at once and look forward to using this book as a reference source once I've had the time to complete it.

4.0 out of 5 stars So thorough, August 27, 2007

This is such a thorough treatment of the subject that I left with very few unanswered questions. Some of those questions have to do with modern demon posession, which he touches on, but not deeply.

Unger grounds his study deeply in the Old and New Testaments giving us a breadth and depth of insight on the war going on behind the scenes since the Fall. If the bible does not cover the topic it is not in this book, and I love that. Far too often sensationalists write to solve problems and address situations using scripture that does not apply. The only weakness I find with this great resource is its dispensational presuppositions concerning the Last Days, but that is a small thing. Over all this is a book that would benefit every Christian.

There's a lot going on, on TV in novels, all over the place. The supernatural has made a comeback, in spite of science, etc. I wanted a conservative biblical discussion of just what we can count on as accurate theological knowledge concerning these things. Merrill F. Unger has provided that. An interesting read and great reference.

Biblical Demonology deals with a topic so rife in our culture, yet neglected by pastors the world over. Ask the average church-going individual if a Christian can be possessed and count how many different answers you get. Ask the average missionary if they have ever encountered demonic forces. You'd be amazed at the disparity! And yet few authors tackle the subject with such scholarly attention. This is by far the best book I have ever read on the topic of demonology. There is little substance not backed with references for further study. Unger's work is a great addition to any pastor's library. It answers questions raised by society. Great for dealing with those "Paranormal Activity" buffs. Great read!

I read this tome about 9 years ago now, and continue to be blown away by the biblical insight of Merrill F. Unger. He tackles a tough biblical subject with a great deal of scholarly wisdom. A must read for those interested in "the spiritual forces in high places."

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best resources on this subject, April 20, 2011
This review is from: Biblical Demonology: A Study of Spiritual Forces at Work Today (Paperback)
A masterful treatment on the subject of demonology. Unger states that this book is an adaption of his doctoral dissertation. Therefore, you can expect it to delve deep into the subject and treat many areas that you probably have not thought of. This book takes a scriptural look at demons and is not speculative as some are. He goes into detail describing each activity relating to demons, such as necromancy, sorcery, divination etc. I have done much research on the area of demonology and I have found this book to be the best overall scholarly treatment of this subject available. The one area I think this book lacks in is with regard to demon possession. Unger states briefly that he doesn't think Christians can be possessed but he gives little support. However, if you read his "sequel" book "What demons can do to saints" you will find this subject treated in more detail with a slightly different conclusion. Unger is a recognized scholar and reading this book is a treat. Not many books are this thorough in covering their subject matter. I consider this book to be the gold standard of any work on demonology. If you intend to do a lesson or series on demons you should get this book. If you are interested in this subject you will not find a better book for your library.

Unger's work is still the standard on the subject. His systematic study is free from the author's personal opinions as he emphasizes that the Word of God is our standard for truth, especially on a subject such as Demonology where we cannot obtain facts empirically. In addition, Unger does not ignore non-biblical sources in this fascinating study.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic bottom line reference., April 19, 2008

This book is an excellent bottom-line Biblical doctrinal guide to demonology. There is much misinformation available today because demonology has become a currect subject of fascination.

This book clearly delineates what the Bible has actually revealed on the subject, making it much easier to evaluate all the current myths, legends, urban myths, and experiential conclusions and hypotheses that abound.

I highly recommend this book if you are seeking a balanced Biblical foundation and perspective for your studies of this vital and confusing subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authoritative and Assiduous, December 5, 2008
By
This review is from: Biblical Demonology: A Study of Spiritual Forces at Work Today (Paperback)
"Biblical Demonology" is one of the only, if not the only, authoritative book that endeavours to explain the workings of demons with the Bible as the sole source of study. And this is extremely important for any Christians who believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God.

"Biblical Demonology" begins with an evaluation of the field of demonology and how different ages, cultures and races have viewed, and evaluated, the existence and workings of demons. Unger demonstrates that Christianity, prescribed by the infallible Word of the Bible, is the only medium with which demonology should be studied. Even Judaism, the `cousin' of Christianity, fails to properly deal with demonology, which is evidenced by the excessive superstition of demons which inhibited the workings of the Jewish life.
Once Unger establishes the Bible as the best source for demonological studies he then goes on to discussing Biblical demonology in demon possession, magic, divination, necromancy, heresy, word governments, Eschatology and deliverance.

This book is certainly the best material out there for studying demonology from a strictly Biblical perspective. It is written in a very attractive and addictive style. I have no hesitation giving this book the highest possible rating.
