Mott's Biblical Ethics and Social Change is still foundational after 20+ years. Rather than sounding off about particular social/political issues (as per Sider or Wallis), Mott provides a "Biblical Theology of Social Involvement" and then charts out the beginnings of "Paths to Justice" (see table of contents). Anyone with a high view of Christian Scripture will appreciate Mott's engagement of biblical texts. He is particularly adept at relating them to strands in Christian thought that hamstring efforts for social justice. Some of the progressive priorities that emerge in Mott's work may challenge some readers, but his biblical orientation is evident. He adds to this a balanced practical exploration of stronger methods of social involvement (such as civil disobedience and armed resistance), which is a welcome supplement in preparing novice reformers for the activity of social engagement.

This book illustrates the real "hole in the gospel." A must read for any Christian or individual interested in the bible who wants to know the relevance of faith beyond the self.

Mott does a wonderful job in rightly bringing social justice within the framework of the gospel. Social justice is not a liberal agenda or something secondary to the gospel, but is the very fruit of the gospel proclaimed through Word and lived out in deeds. Mott is realistic in helping us see that God`s kingdom is breaking into human history, but will only be a glimpse or partial fulfillment until such time that God decides to realize it fully. Nevertheless, we work not on our own, but in the power of the Holy Spirit recognizing that God is the true transformer.

Mott's book is highly Biblical (the references abound throughout the text) and incorporates a solid understanding of Hebrew culture. I wholeheartedly agree with the majority of his conclusions, though not with the chapter permitting the Christian to use violence to protect the abused and downtrodden. (But this isn't the place for my counter-arguments.)

I don't personally agree with some of Mott's theological foundations, but I found that he did a very good job of making the book applicable to those of us of different theological persuasions. If you have major questions about the Biblical foundations for "social justice" in the Church, look no further than this book. It is a wonderful wake up for a Church that likes to excuse itself from having to take action because of an overly-internalized and individualistic faith.

Not exciting to read but makes the point about how a church can change culture and help people.
