Book Description

September 1, 2002
"A bicycle ride is a flight from sadness." --James E. Starrs, The Literary Cyclist In our car-crazed world, it is the bicycle that exemplifies many freedoms. Like a patriot, a bicycle is rugged, unhampered, athletic, straightfoward, and independent. And as an added bonus, it is a simple machine anyone can learn to perform maintenance on. For years photographer Linda Svendsen has captured images of bicycles from around the world providing glimpses of the machine in all its forms and uses combined. With over 200 images, Bicycle is a true celebration of one of the world's classic mode of transportation that will inspire you to leave the SUV at home and bike whenever and wherever you can. So what are you waiting for--grab a copy and go for a spin!

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

In our car-crazed world, the bicycle is the one mode of transportation that is powered by the human spirit. Whether hauling groceries, racing the speedometer to strengthen performance, or touring through the countryside, riding a bike is a statement of independence and self-determination. Bicycle is the culmination of Linda Svendsen's obsession with the wheel. Her images capture the bike around the world in its myriad forms, frames, and fascinations.

From the Back Cover

"When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race." --H. G. Wells

5.0 out of 5 stars The bicycle in the World, January 19, 2012
By
This is a 416p book of color photographs about the size of a thick paperback. It is a montage of images of parked bicycles outside temples, parks, buildings and markets as well as in the garbage. There are no words. It documents the view that the bicycle is a cultural artifact the expression of which is determined by its context. Many are adapted to specific uses such as being used as a scarecrow in a field or selling food and carrying loads/passengers. There are pictures of bicycles in every country of the World; the USA, Netherlands, China, India, Africa, Turkey, etc. The pictures are not organized by country. It has pictures of both sleek custom tandems with vintage components and rusty, dirty Third World load-haulers. It gives you a current panoramic view of the many different uses a bicycle can be put to and still be a bicycle. Every time I pass a bicycle I look at it. The author does more than just that; she photographs them. This book is a stunning Avant-Garde expression. I personally love artistic expressions that push the limits of our assumptions. It has no page numbers and no table of contents. You get the idea that these are photographs of bicycles she saw as she was traveling the World. If, like me, you like to look at bicycles and like artistic expressions this book saves you the plane fare of traveling around the World to see the many contexts in which they can be found.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transportation of the future, March 3, 2008
This is a fun book about a very healthy form of exercise. Great photos of bikes for everyday cycling as opposed to racing from around the world.
