Yves Montand, who was born in Italy and had little formal schooling, evolved into the epitome of a debonair French gentleman. An important film star, as well as a singer, he was active in political affairs all his life. Beginning as a man of the Left, Montand gradually traversed the political spectrum, ending as a possible right-wing contender for the French presidency. Married for more than 30 years to the actress Simone Signoret, Montand was also identified as the lover of many other women, including Edith Piaf and Marilyn Monroe. He began his career as a crooner of American cowboy melodies and, unlike most of the other masters of the
chansonette genre, did not compose his own songs or create their lyrics. Instead, he interpreted a number of poems by major French poets, mostly of the far-left persuasion, such as Louis Aragon. Later, he became identified with the numerous songs provided by his close collaborator, Jacques Prevert. The title song of this CD, "Bicyclette," is a prime example of Montand's ability to impart Gallic charm and a lilting joie de vivre to a simple story in song.
