Why did'nt we hear these folks?,

I came across this cd purely by accident a few years ago and it was a pure delight. It's a refreshing trip through American roots music ranging from cajun to old-time to depression-era pop. I only wish I had been aware of them when they were playing the circuit.

Bought this CD for one song--See You In C-U-B-A--which is the best version I've heard of this Prohibition classic. Arhoolie always fills their CD's, just short of 80 minutes with this one, as two albums are included. AOTSB is a talented bunch of women!

If you're looking for a charming, unassuming all-acoustic album to simply fall in love with, then give this CD a spin. This San Francisco Bay Area ensemble was one of the most charming -- and accomplished -- of the late -70s string band revivalists. This CD combines two LPs originally issued in 1978 and 1980, and features their lovely version of the goofy melodic oldie, "C-U-B-A". Sweet stuff, and highly recommended.

I could listen to the "Any Old Time" any old time!,

These gals are great. A true love of the string band format, great command of their instruments, and a whole lot of soul. Any Old Time is one of the reasons I became interested in this genre of music and clawhammer banjo playing. Give this one a listen, folks... you won't be disappointed.

Amazing Musicians,

Never written a review before, but I can't miss out on urging people to buy this CD. I had the great experience of seeing these people live at the Grass Valley (CA) Bluegrass Festival in 1978 or so. NEVER have I see such a combo of musicianship, fun, grace, and incredible sound. I was thunderstruck with their skill, I don't mind admitting it. I hunted for and bought their record, of course, and was delighted when this CD turned out to be a re-release of that original album, plus a bunch of new stuff. A few members have changed, but they are still great. I am going to buy another copy of this first CD, and they have another CD as well, "Any Old Time / Crossing", but I haven't found a source yet. |
