There's not much worse in life than the loss of someone you love and coping with unresolved regrets. Jane Maxwell has lost her husband and now lives in the house in France they had planned to live in once he retired. Village life appeals to her and allows her to contemplate where she has been and where she is going. Flashbacks show that Jane had a difficult, lonely childhood; married her sweetheart; and followed him to the cold, dank city where he began his medical career. When her husband is called up to service, she is stuck with a child and at the mercy of his boss. At the end of the war, both Jane and her husband are ready to move on, but because of extenuating circumstances, they never do. With his death, Jane finds herself questioning her worth as a wife, mother, and capable woman. Paige's latest work is quickly read but resonates long after the last page is turned.
