A Grimm Look at the Moon, December 11, 2002

This review is from: Big Alex (Audio CD)
This is the delightful performance of Orff's opera for children and the old who are young in heart, "Der Mond" (The Moon), which was originally available as an LP on Angel in the 1960's. It is a delightful tale with, as is always the case with tales from the Brothers Grimm, a lesson to be learned. It is sung in German, but is easily followed in English in the accompanying booklet. Digital schmitagal, don't pass this by because it's an analog recording. It's hands down the best. I don't know "Die Kluge" (Frau),(The Wise Woman)as well, but in an interview with the great conductor Erich Leinsdorf he recommended both to me as appropriate vehicles for The Muppets (or Moppets as he called them !). What these works need is a good English translation that is true to the rhyme pattern of the original and fits with the music. This is long and undeservedly neglected Orff. Buy it and have some fun with the TV OFF !!
