Republican activists love talking about the origins of their party – and with good reason. In 1854, the party was founded to promote responsible government and oppose the expansion of slavery. This progressive message found an enthusiastic audience, the new party rocketing to prominence. Just six years later, Republicans elected their first president, Abraham Lincoln, a towering historical figure who would achieve a type of American martyrdom.

Unfortunately, Lincoln’s death wrapped up the party’s brief era of principle. Afterwards, it became the power tool of unscrupulous Gilded Age magnates, who hollowed out its moral center and filled it with gold. The Republican brand quickly became tarnished by money-grubbers, graft masters, incompetent boobs and power-mad Machiavellis. You’re probably already familiar with a few of the Republicans-gone-bad included here. Others, you’ll certainly meet for the first time.

Who can forget a lifelong scoundrel like Richard Nixon, whose misdeeds go way beyond the Watergate cover-up? Then there are rogues like Charles Bowles and Oakes Ames, blights upon the Earth who have been almost lost to history. It’s almost amazing that old Abe, sitting stone-faced in his giant chair at the Lincoln Memorial, hasn’t taken to the fetal position.

So sit back and read about the Republicans. Discover all the greed, all the power grabs, all the dirty tricks, all the sheer evil. And if you’re an honorable Republican, don’t worry too much. With a little training, you also can learn this important lesson: the ends justify the means.
