Republican activists love talking about the origins of their party – and with good reason. In 1854, the party was founded to promote responsible government and oppose the expansion of slavery. This progressive message found an enthusiastic audience, the new party rocketing to prominence. Just six years later, Republicans elected their first president, Abraham Lincoln, a towering historical figure who would achieve a type of American martyrdom.

Unfortunately, Lincoln’s death wrapped up the party’s brief era of principle. Afterwards, it became the power tool of unscrupulous Gilded Age magnates, who hollowed out its moral center and filled it with gold.
