Book Description

March 31, 2008 5 and upK and up
A wolf, Big and Bad, is on the loose, bounding across the hills and gobbling up every creature in his path. As he grows taller than the midnight moon, the other animals begin to worry that soon the planet will be too small for his increasing appetite. Beavers try to drown him in their pond, crows pelt him with walnuts, and moles dig an underground pit—to no avail. Alone, they are helpless against the mighty wolf, until a pair of wily cats comes up with a plan . . . Etienne Delessert reimagines the classic tale of “The Three Pigs” by turning the tables on the marauding wolf as the animals join together to set a trap to stop his ravenous rampage. Beautifully illustrated, this allegorical retelling offers an alternative perspective on the original story, extending its significance and raising questions about unchecked aggression and the power of cooperation.

5.0 out of 5 stars spunky animals, July 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Big and Bad (Hardcover)
Delessert's illustrations are, of course, bright and whimsical and delightful. I bought this book for my granddaughter. When she came to see me recently, we went to an exhibit of Delessert's illustrations for his children's books. I wanted her to read some of the books before we went, so she could "meet" Delessert before seeing the exhibit. She loved the books and was totally enchanted with the exhibit, reading each book on display beside the original illustrations. The spunky animals in "Big and Bad" who cooperate with each other to stand up to the wolf are a joyful crew. And while they do dispense of the wolf by fire, as in the original tale, Delessert makes the whole scene humorous. My granddaughter laughed to see the wolf-comet streaking across the sky.

4.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Kids @ Teens Read Too, March 11, 2008
This review is from: Big and Bad (Hardcover)
In this clever retelling of the The Three Little Pigs, Wolf is a character larger than life. He is as tall as the moon, eats every

animal in his way, wears the skin of cats as a hat, and even has birds who clean his shiny, spiky teeth at night!

No matter what type of plan the other animals come up with, nothing can stop Wolf. Until one day, when two cats come up with a scheme to use three cute, plump pink pigs to lure Wolf into a trap.

The first house they make, of twigs and straw, comes down easily -- but the pigs have escaped through a trap door! The second house, made of logs, also comes down -- but no pigs! It's not until the Wolf finds the pigs (and other animal guests) at home in their third new house, made of bricks, that things get a little too hot to handle!

This is a fun retelling of the story known by all, with very well-done illustrations. It's a bit scarier than the original version, though, so some young children might not like it as a bed time read!
