OK, there are hundreds of DTC/OBD scanners on the market, and they range in price from $19 to $1,500. How do you pick the right one? The options are so many that it can really make you nuts just trying to figure out exactly what you need.

I was considering dropping $200 on a BlueTooth or Wi-Fi based scanner, but the few that I played with were finicky and far too expensive for what they actually did.

When it came right down to it, I needed:
1) a code scanner that speaks plain English
Don't feed me a bunch of codes that I have to go lookup somewhere else. If the code means that the Bank2 Sensor 1 oxygen sensor is bad, the scanner should say that on the screen.
2) a code scanner that understood my Toyota Tundra and my BMW X3 and my Jeep.
3) a code scanner that could clear the codes once I corrected the fault.
4) a code scanner that could operate while the vehicle was running to give me a view into what was happening in the engine.

Now.. I could have spent a ton of money on a really high-end scan tool.. but I'm not opening my own garage, this is just for my own maintenance purposes (and keeping the garage I take the truck to honest.) I needed something south of the $150 mark.

After playing with a few different scanners, the Big Banana scanner became the obvious choice. It does exactly what I need it to do.. and at a price that doesn't make me feel bad if it sits on the back of my workbench for a year at a time. Great product.

I decided to take a chance with the limited, but positive reviews and test out this scanner. I was initially looking at OBDII code readers with live data and they are all upwards of $150-200+. After some searching I found there were cheaper version that scan and read codes but at a much lower price. After 160k miles, my car finally threw a CEL and instead of going to the mechanic, I figured for the price of the scanner it would be worth it.

The scanner has paid for itself after only one job! I was able to retrieve my code and the display tells you what the problem is instead of writing the number down and searching for it online. My problem was the usual o2 sensor and it specified which one. I went on Amazon and ordered 2 o2 sensors since I figured I should just change the other one at the same time. I swapped out the parts and was able to reset my light. So far the light has not come back on.

The scanner interface is incredibly easy to use and intuitive. Scrolling through the live data is pretty cool but I need to do a little more research to figure out what all the parameters mean. The scanner also runs several tests on the o2 sensors as well. Just remember to plug the scanner in BEFORE you turn on the car, and unplug AFTER you turn off the car.

I am excited to have this product but I hope I do not need to use it very often for fear of replacing parts... however it is super easy to use and I am glad I purchased it. It is definitely convenient to check codes yourself instead of going to the mechanic, and even if you have to go you'll be prepared as to what repairs are needed. I'm sure it'll come in handy when one of my friends CEL comes on too!

Been having intermittent engine problems with my truck over past year & my mechanic couldn't pinpoint the problem with the vague codes that were recorded on the truck's computer. Consequently, I decided that maybe I should purchase one of these diagnostic scanners so I could monitor the engine with live data. I settled on the BB600 because of the good reviews & the reasonable pricing for the amount of features offered.

Although I have not experienced any codes thus far, I am thoroughly happy with my purchase because of the ease of use & more importantly, the excellent customer service provided by the company. After I received the unit, I had some questions, so I emailed the company late on a Wednesday afternoon. I live in Hawaii, so there was the issue of being in a different time zone & yet Trevor responded within two hours. He answered all of my questions & offered some helpful advice. I was further impressed with Trevor because he also did a followup email several days later with more information related to the problem I had been experiencing with my truck. You'd be hard pressed to find another company with this kind of customer service.

As for the BB600 unit itself, it appears to be well made, chuck full of features & as mentioned earlier, simple to use. The only small gripe I have is that the cord is a little short if it is plugged in to obtain live data during driving. On my Toyota Tacoma, the unit, while plugged in, will at most just reach my lap. Because it would be difficult to monitor the scanner while driving alone during an occurrence, I had planned on having someone ride with me but that person would be bent over from the passenger seat trying to read it. The cord is approximately 26". Another 18-24" would be perfect.

All in all, love the unit & highly recommend it!

this tool has already paid for itself in giving me the code and cause for a check engine light. We all fear that little illuminated engine symbol as it can be your savior from potential serious issues but at the same time you could be opening your wallet or purse to pay for unnecessary parts or repairs. This modestly priced but sophisticated device was easy for me to use by just plugging into the car and turning the ignition key (without starting the engine), the device does the rest. it also allowed me to reset a non-serious code to see if it comes up again, saving me a trip to the dealer and a $100 diagnostic fee.
