5.0 out of 5 stars Part Of THE Premier Big Band Collection, January 29, 2009
By
AvidOldiesCollector (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Big Bands Jimmy Dorsey (Audio CD)
This is but one volume of the massive Time-Life "mail order only" Big Band series of a couple of decades ago which covered all the early greats, and if you can get your hands on one of these Jimmy Dorsey editions at the price being shown, go for it. Fast while they last.

The sound reproduction is just excellent and in the fold-out insert you get 2 1/2 pages on his career and another 2 1/2 pages providing comments on each of the recordings included by Richard M. (Dick) Sudhalter, the renowned Boston-born jazz trumpeter, scholar and music critic who played trumpet and cornet with the New York Jazz Repertory Company and, in 1983, co-founded the Classic Jazz Quartet (he passaed away on September 19, 2008 at age 70). Also, there is a complete discography of the contents, including musicians involved, which range from 1935 to 1942.

The tracks (with the year recorded and vocalist, chart performance - if nothing is shown it did not chart - and label numbers, where applicable) are: 1) Contrasts - April 30, 1940 - Decca 3198; 2) Amapola - Feb 3, 1941 - vocal by Bon Eberly & Helen O'Connell - Decca 3629 - # 1 for 10 weeks Apr/May 1941; 3) My Prayer - Oct 20, 1939 - vocal by Bob Eberly - Decca 2810; 4) John Silver - April 29, 1938 - vocal by Bob Eberly - Decca 3334; 5) Arthur Murray Taught Me Dancing In A Hurry - Dec 10, 1941 - vocal by Helen O'Connell - Decca 4122 - # 18 March 1942; 6) Dorsey Stomp Oct 10, 1935 - Decca 607; 7) The Love Bug Will Bite You - March 3, 1937 - vocal by Ray McKinley - Decca 1187 - # 6 May 1937; 8) Brazil - July 14, 1942 - vocal by Bob Eberly & Helen O'Connell - Decca 18460 - # 14 Dec 1942/Jan 1943 - also reached # 8 R&B; 9) Blue Champagne - April 29, 1941 - vocal by Bob Eberly - Decca 3775 - # 1 July 1941; 10)Parade of The Milk Bottle Caps - July 7, 1936 - Decca 941; 11) Six Lessons From Madame La Zonga - April 9, 1940 - vocal by Helen O'Connell - Decca 3152 - # 4 July 1940; 12) I Can't Face The Music - March 15, 1938 - vocal by June Richmond - Decca 1746; 13) Green Eyes - March 19, 1941 - vocal by Bob Eberly & Helen O'Connell - Decca 3698 - # 1 for 4 weeks June 1941; 14) All Of Me - March 3, 1939 - vocal by Helen O'Connell - Decca 2352 - flip of Our Love; 15) Dusk In Upper Sandusky - April 29, 1938 - Decca 1939; 16) Sorghum Switch - June 2, 1942 - Decca 18372 - # 21 Sept 1942 as flip of My Devotion; 17. Maria Elena - March 19, 1941 - vocal by Bob Eberly - Decca 3698 - # 1 for 6 weeks as flip of Green Eyes; 18) Yours - Feb 3, 1941 - vocal by Bob Eberly & Helen O'Connell - Decca 3657 # 2 June 1941; 19) The Breeze And I - April 18, 1940 - vocal by Bob Eberly - decca 3150 - # 1 July 1940; 20) Jim - Aug 1, 1941 - vocal by Bob Eberly & Helen O'Connell - Decca 3963 - # 2 Oct 1941; 21) Tangerine - Dec 10, 1941 - vocal by Bob Eberly & Helen O'Connell - Decca 4123 - # 1 for 6 weeks May 1942.
