4.0 out of 5 stars Big Bang for your Buck
Solid debut from Akbar. Live and direct from the Ill Boogie camp, Akbar's Big Bang Boogie provides a well rounded catalog of dope Hip-Hop. There aren't many faults to point out with this one. 4.0 out of 5 stars Big Bang for your Buck, July 9, 2001

Solid debut from Akbar. Live and direct from the Ill Boogie camp, Akbar's Big Bang Boogie provides a well rounded catalog of dope Hip-Hop. There aren't many faults to point out with this one. Akbar's rhyme flow is confident and clever while the supporting soundscape offers some pleasing cuts to hook your ears on. For instance M-Boogie, the labels resident beat provider, pastes together a bouncy, guitar looped delight with "No Suckas Allowed". Akbar ups the value of the track two-fold with his slick mic control and verbal cadence. It's hot, along with the other first 4 cuts. M-Boogie's "Hot ya Hot" remix is one of the stronger cuts on the LP, but I'm split between the more stripped down vibe of the original version that's included towards the end of the album. Although Akbar tends to get a little preachy and wordy (check "Akbar Speaks") when he rants uncontrollably about proper eating habits, breathing, body cells and so on, it's only a minor distraction from an otherwise impressive solo debut.

4.0 out of 5 stars Akbar rules the M-I-C, January 23, 2002

Words cannot discribe how I feel about this kid Akbar. Dope comes imediatly to mind. I think M-Boogie's production is a little on the Premier imitation - Akbar, use other Djs just because this cat is the label owner doesnt mean you have to let him ruin the beatz hire the executioners or Peanut Butter Wolf for god's sake!

Anyway, props to Akbar and props to Matt Terio aka M-Boogie (just stop djing and just sign more dope ass talent, ight?)

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Emcee, June 6, 2008
This review is from: Big Bang Boogie (Audio CD)
Akbar is an emcee with the voice, rhymes, and swagger of a true mc. Been a fan since his early 90s group Mental Giants in Chicago. Dope beats and lyrics. This is HIP-HOP. For fans of Rakim.

As far as I know, Akbar hasn't done anything since. But if you're a fan of NYC conscious hip-hop, seek this out. Awesome production, awesome rhymes. Great album.

Akbar lives up to his Arabic name in this album. This album had me wanting to get on the "Muthaship" and encounter my own "Space Odyssey". Another notable song is "Driftin' Thru Space". The song is probably the first song I ever heard from a lyricist that spoke of Allah and how Allah, the most Beneficient and most Merciful, created the Universe, and how Allah created Adam. But for all you underground rap lovers out there this is a CD for you. Do not sleep on this CD!

4.0 out of 5 stars "Hip Hop on a higher level", August 17, 2001

Akbar is no joke. Ill Boogie Records has found what L.L. Cool J. was to Def Jam. A seasoned veteran, to be sure. I have M-Boogie's "Laid In Full, Chapter 2" and Akbar's "Hot Ya Hot" is on there. And I was thinking, "damn, does this kid have a tape out...he's nice." As usual, couldn't find it in none of "select record stores". Ironically, I had to get it out in the suburbs. But definitely, a thorough debut from a future heavy hitter in Hip Hop. An MC's MC. Grip "Big Bang Boogie" y'all.
