Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2-Big Bear is left to baby-sit Little Bear while their mother runs an errand. Trying to substantiate his "can do anything" big-brother role, he falls for his sibling's dares (standing on his head, jumping on the sofa, swinging from the curtain, etc.) and in the process, of course, leaves the house in shambles. Bear's regrettable taunting of his brother is hardly endearing but young listeners should enjoy the boys' no-you-can't/yes-I-can repetitive dialogue as well as the cuddly watercolors.

More About the Author

I wanted to be a professional soccer player for a long time, but I didn't make it. I liked school too, though, and my favourite subject was biology - so I became a biologist. I had a job at Stanford University, where I worked in a lab, wore a lab coat, and made new antibiotics. I was heading towards being a Professor, but I changed my mind and became a writer instead.

I write picture books for younger children, and a soccer series ('The Team') for older children. The Team has got great football players AND a Professor in it.

I grew up in England where I still live with my family, by the sea in Norfolk.

My favourite books:

A Ladybird book of 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff' started me off. I used to copy out the story, one painful letter at a time. I would underline in felt pen the words in the book I had copied.

When I was older I was hooked on 'The Famous Five' stories, but I also liked Annuals like 'Whizzer and Chips' and 'Monster Fun', and I had some great graphic novels about Dracula. At school we read 'Stig of the Dump', 'The Hobbit', 'Moonfleet', and 'To Kill a Mockingbird', all of which I still enjoy and admire. These books made me love stories and reading - and I was speechless when, not so long ago, I met the author of Stig!

5.0 out of 5 stars Who is Big Bear?, October 17, 2001
This review is from: Big Bears Can! (Hardcover)
Okay, so I'm the author reviewing my own book. I know. Let's say I'm giving the ILLUSTRATIONS five stars. And I just wanted to say that the debate about Big Bear is raging from Europe to the US. Is Big Bear Little Bear's big brother - in which case the small dude's taunting is regrettable indeed! - or is he Little Bear's long suffering DAD, a character so lovingly responsive to taunts from junior? This second was my intention. The dad from Texas thought so as well, but not the Library reviewer. Maybe you'll decide for yourself. If you do, let me know.

5.0 out of 5 stars ...or how to get dad in a tight spot, June 1, 2001

This review is from: Big Bears Can! (Hardcover)
Baby bear is left with dad and he entices and encourages his dad to do more and more....a delightful story that highlights the wonderful ability children have to sucker us in to their way of thinking.

1.0 out of 5 stars There are better books out there!, April 19, 2011

This review is from: Big Bears Can! (Paperback)
I read this book to my daughter the first time the other night, after it was purchased for her by her grandmother. The book itself is nothing special. The illustrations are cute, but I was bothered by not knowing who "Big Bear" was. But what bothered me the most is that after causing chaos around the house, Big Bear gets "told off" by Mother Bear. When I read that I paused and re-read it, just to make sure I had read it correctly. I don't want my 2.5 year old daughter "telling people off," and I don't think its appropriate language for a childrens' book. I realize after reading other reviews that the author is British, and maybe it has a different connotation in other countries, but i think that's something the publisher should have caught.
